  • Nostalgic 80s songs

These could also be guilty iPod pleasures but here are mine:

    5. When Smokey Sings. ABC
    4. Head Over Heals. The Go-Go's
    3. Talking in Your Sleep. The Romantics
    2. Voices Carry. 'Til Tuesday
    1. Overkill. Men at Work

Man, these songs suck. But I love them!

The all-time greatest "wish I were 12 years old again" song is "Can't Get There From Here" from R.E.M.'s Eponymous album. That's actually a good song.

I grew up with the music of the 80s and loved it, but I listened to a lot of it for a long time, so a lot of it doesn't get much play these days. Stuff that I still listen to and like includes:

Talking Heads - Lots of stuff. I have the entire "Stop Making Sense" soundtrack, along with various other stuff.
The Clash - a few songs from "London Calling"
Violent Femmes - From their first album. I guess this could be a guilty pleasure. I skip over "Add it Up" if my kids are in the car, because I am a good father.
Elvis Costello - More of his early stuff than later stuff.
R.E.M. - I kind of burned out on R.E.M., but I can still listen to Automatic for the People and a few songs from other albums.
They Might be Giants - For various weird reasons, "Ana Ng" is one of my favorite songs.

"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

Hang on now. Are the Cars really a guilty pleasure? I think they stand the test of time.

CA has already derailed this thread.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I didn't know we had to list guilty pleasures, just 80s nostalgia. Sorry.

Here are my 80s guilty pleasure songs:

                Madonna - Like a Prayer
Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen
Adam Ant - Strip (I especially feel guilty about the lame "spoken word" part)

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

When I air drum in the car to The Cars I feel much guilt.

Technically, you're supposed to list nostalgic songs. I haven't thought of any, yet, but I'm working on it. Summer of 69, maybe.

Some of those movie soundtracks really stick out in my mind -- Flashdance, Footloose and Top Gun. The John Hughes movies aren't known as much for their soundtracks, but Don't You Forget About Me from Simple Minds is definitely nostalgic for me. Even though it's from the 60s, I associate Twist and Shout with Ferris Bueller's Day Off and therefore the 80s.

Another "nostalgic" song from the 80s is Puttin' on the Ritz. Taco is pining for a different era of fashion and glamour.
