The Black Keys

So, after buying Brothers back in August, and after getting Spotify finally, I've come to the conclusion that the Black Keys is now one of my favorite bands. While not entirely the same, this isn't grungy emo the White Stripes perfected. This is driving-your-car-with-the-windows-down-while-the-air-conditioning's-running music, the kind of stuff you want to play loud enough so that you can feel it, the riffs you find yourself humming all the time.

"Baby I'm Howlin' for You" is a great line, but I really enjoy the song "Do the Rump" from The Big Come Up the most. The fuzzed-out guitar in "Have Love Will Travel" is great too.

The bluesyness reminds me of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac stuff. His voice sounds like a raspy Scott Weiland ca. 1994, and all that fuzz tone makes me want to listen to Hendrix too.

They easily have 30 songs that I can listen to over and over again.

Next time they come this way in concert, I'm going to close shave my hair, fluff my beard, and go see how out-of-place I am at one of their concerts.

Right on, wuap. Certainly among the breakout stars in "10, and nobody deserves it more than them. Glad to see them getting another album out this year -- take you victory lap, boys, you've earned it.

If I could make a greatest hits collection of all the best live songs I've ever seen, I Got Mine would definitely be in there. The last time I saw them, they played it as the last song in their encore, and they stretched out that build portion longer than usual. Dan got everyone clapping and stomping while they were just building and building through that part, and when Dan launched back into that riff at the end the place was just going nuts. It was a great moment.

I'm a big BK fan, they are right in my Ryan Adam, White Stripes, Morning Jacket wheelhouse. What I find interesting is, much like the Kings of Leon, the songs that get the most (satellite) radio airplay are generally some of my least favorites. I did, and still do, love Next Girl, though- it has a fantastic hook.

The bass on Mind Eraser is really great. Hearing The Keys with some bass is something I've really enjoyed about the last two records.

I'm trying not to burn out on this thing, but I just keep having the desire to listen to it. Hopefully the fact that I like it this much on early listens doesn't mean I won't care as much for it in 20 listens.

I'm excited for the new release. The five teaser songs have all been very good. For me there are always a few throw-aways on a Black Keys album. I'll be interested to see if they tighten it up a little on this release.
