Another thread mentioned a few excellent songs about New York, Chicago, Kansas City, Bangkok, and Jackson. I’m curious to hear about other favorites, but let me mention three local offerings. Tony Bennett’s “I Left My Heart,” of course, and I laugh everytime I listen to Eric Burdon singing “San Francisco Nights”:
The children are cool
They don't raise fools
It's an American dream
Includes Indians too
But a sentimental fave is “Mill Valley.” The was a song written and performed by a 4th grade class in the small but upscale Marin County town. The song became a surprise national hit and made the charts in 1970. It was presented in one of the first music videos, directed by a young Francis Ford Coppola. Note the Earth Mother schoolteacher, the naked flute player, dancing hippies, a little kid slammin’ back a cold brew, and other late ‘60s memorabilia that bring a nostalgic tear to my eye.
