  • What happened 20 years ago today? Oh, Nevermind...

Yes, Nevermind! The album was released 20 years ago today. I'm not going to say it changed my life or anything, but I did get many, many hours out of that CD and it pushed me to buying flannel like I never had before. Thinking that was 20 years ago makes me realize how old I am becoming.

Just remember that with the lights out, it's less dangerous.
I have nothing else to say at this time.

That doesn't seem possible. I think I'm younger than most people here, but I remeber that album vividly.

There was a segment on NPR (I think) about the baby on the cover. He is now a 20 year old art student in CA. Nothing too interesting. He did have some crude/clever pick up lines based on his picture, "I'm definitely bigger now, wanna see?"
"You interns are like swallows. You shit all over my patients for six weeks and then fly off."

"Don't be sorry, it's not your fault. It's my fault for overestimating your competence."

Here is a very interesting article about the feminism contained in the album, and how important it was to many women. Hadn't considered this angle before:

Don't sell it short. That album changed everything in music. And youth culture. It was a seismic shift. It singlehandedly destroyed glam metal and announced to the world that there really was a generation of disaffected and disinterested latch key kids growing up with anxiety and social disorders that seemed indifferent towards the Me-First money-driven culture that permeated the 80s. Teens were angry, annoyed, bored and unlike prior youth movements of the boomer 50s and Vietnam era hippie movement, these kids didn't see a future.

I posted this in the Covers thread about Miley Cyrus covering Smells Like Teen Spirit

Very few songs can be clearly identified as the line of demarcation between one era and another...and not just a demarcation between one decade and another, but an entire genre of music, fashion, attitude, etc. Basically, that song changed everything. Very few songs have done that. It shouldn't be covered, esp by her. It sounded fine but also sounded completely meaningless at the same time.
Nevermind sounds as good today as 20 years ago. It is a fantastic album.

I love Nirvana but let's be honest: they made stuff Suicidal Tendencies, the DKs and Black Flag had been doing for over a decade more radio friendly and not much more than that.

And Cervantes just rewrote La Chanson de Roland with a better frame story.

                        BOOM BITCHES!

Yes, it's an awesome album and I listened to it again today while doing some work around the house. "Drain You" is still my favorite off that album. But in general, I think I like Ten more.

I was on my mission when it was released but returned shortly thereafter. I'll received the album a few months after returning and will admit that, while I loved the album, I didn't understand the significance initially. I came home, wanted to see what Howard Jones and Depeche Mode were up to and get the new Damn Yankees album.
