So I will go ahead and write up a very short review of my mix. It is all jazz music, which is very cool, and I have had the chance to listen through it a couple of times. I don't know enough about jazz to critique individual tracks, however if my mix-maker has some insight into why he chose them, I would love to learn more. I enjoy jazz, but have always figured I missed the chance to become an informed listener when I failed to take any jazz appreciation classes at BYU. Whenever I have a few bucks left in credits on my eMusic subscription, I head over to the jazz section and noodle around, only to discover that I have no idea how to find anything really good. So I was really happy to get a mix full of jazz from someone who presumably knows something about jazz. I love Miles Davis, Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins, but that is about the extent of my jazz knowledge (and outside of Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, and Colossus, I'm not all that familiar with those three artists... pitiful).

Anyhow, I really liked my mix, and felt that it stretched and educated me a bit, and I'm really looking forward to anything the maker might have to say about the tracks.

I typed this up while flying back from Austin, so it probably contains a couple errors and more than my usual number of grammatical errors....

Track 1- I don’t recognize the song or band. Easy going song reminds me of the beach. Easy going rap with a Carribean accent. Lady who sings has a clear, distinctive voice. Nice, fun, opening song. I automatically start tapping my feet whenever I hear it.

Track 2- Who is this? It really reminds me of The Strokes. Lead singer has a clear, strong voice with good harmonizing from the rest of the band. Great lead guitar audible throughout whole song. I will def check this band out.

Track 3 My Morning Jacket- Outta My System. Great new single, from the double entendre- named band. It is a very different sound from most of there earlier stuff.. Every time I hear this, I think of the Ramones.

Track 4 Broken Bells- High Road. I first heard their self titled album a year or so ago. They have a very distinctive sound, which I dig. I’ve listened to their self-titled album several times, some of the songs I like, others not so much. High Road is a fun tune. It seems like BB haven’t quite figured out who they want to be, but the talent is obviously there.

Track 5- Wilco- I Might. I had only heard this pre-released single a couple times before this mix. This song has the usual Wilco catchy beat and clever lyrics. I’m excited to hear the whole album when it is released sometime this fall.

Track 6- I'm sure I've heard this before but I don't recall when, or where. A very relaxing, almost Bon Iver sound. Every time I hear this I start daydreaming. This would be great on a playlist to fall asleep to.

Track 7- I thought I knew a fair amount about music but this is another new singer for me, I'm guessing it is called Paris is". This is along with MMJ are the two favorite songs of the mix. I particularly like the hook, "I'm so tired of these freaks and their violent streaks, as they pound on their chests with their fists and their feet"

Track 8- The most forgettable song of the mix. I don't dislike it; it just doesn't hold my attention. Like a song on a Pandora mix you don't give the thumbs down, but you can't recall much about it as soon as it is over. This is another mellow tune to add to my scout campout playlists, to help me sleep and ignore all the squirrely boys and their bodily sounds.

Track 9- The National -About Today. A great band and a great closing song. Whenever I hear this, I imagine the breakup scene in a movie, as the dude stands on the balcony watching his lover get into a taxi, without looking back. It is very melancholy, without the typical sappiness of most pop songs.

Whoever put this together either knows what I like or has similar tastes. I'm guessing it is one of the Veg boys. Its not as Xanax-popping- depressing as a typical falafel mix nor is there any hint of Mark Mcgraff, making this a tough call. Since it was cleverly named, relatively short and had one The National song, I will go with the new daddy- Doh’Nuts!

It's a good record. Pretty much everyone's immediate reaction has been "the best since A Ghost Is Born." I'm not sure I see that in it, but it has some really standout stuff. Both the opener and the closer are really top notch.

P.S.: There was a tenth song on the mix. Bob Dylan's I was Young When I Left Home. It isn't the most congruous song for the mix, but it is an important song for me, so I just threw it in at the end of the mix (I think I did this on one of the other mixes as well).

Wow. I had no idea we had such similar musical tastes. For some reason I thought you liked jazz and more classic stuff (Dylan, being the perfect example).

Edit: I either didn't download the 10th song, or my mix didn't have it. That is a great song, though slightly out of character for the rest of the mix. However, you can rarely go wrong by putting BD into any playlist.
