    Moneyball

I'm skeptical that this movie will be any good, but I'm willing to give it a try.

    Same.

I know this is Bennet Miller's follow up to Capote and they've got Sorkin writing and everything, but I just can't wrap my head around the idea of being able to watch this movie and not getting totally annoyed.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

You had me at Brad Pitt.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Kind of lame that they are making a movie about a below average major league GM.

It probably won't show the postscript which is that an over-reliance on stats is a failed strategy.

No instead they will have the postscript be that people completely missed the point of the book.

Over-relying on stats has sure been an awful strategy for the Red Sox.

Also, in addition to some good reviews, Keith Law ripped it to shreds.

Moneyball, the movie, is an absolute mess of a film, the type of muddled end product you'd expect from a project that took several years and went through m

I'm not going to read that, because I already know what it says, and I know because I had the same reaction based on the trailer. This is going to be an opportunity for baseball people to get irked based on a bunch of technical innacuracies, and show how much they know about the subject matter. Then because of those innacuracies, they start using movie analysis terms (bad writing! poor character development! flawed story arc!) to justify their dislike of the movie, when the crux for it is simply the baseball issue. It's going to be a complete replay of what we saw with The Hurt Locker, because as soon as Hollywood shines the light on a group they have to show us how much they know.

When I saw the trailer at a movie with a friend, I went on a total rant. They show those baseball scenes and it looks like something from the effing Bad News Bears or Major League. It was just silly. I get position switches, but by the time you've made it to the minors, I don't give a shit if you came up your whole life as a catcher, you know how to competently field a groundball if they put you at 3rd or 1st base. And I'm sure all of this will slide into the story about Beane, the A's, etc. Which is why I said in my first comment that I can't wrap my head around watching this movie and not getting completely annoyed. But I thought the Hurt Locker crowd was silly (we didn't wear fatigues like that in '07! we can't roll our sleeves up! this movie sucks!), so I can't allow myself to do that here. They're not attempting to do anything else other than make a movie.

That's funny, I had the same thought when I saw the trailer. I think there was a pitcher too that completely airmailed the catcher. Then I remembered Zito was on the team and thought that although he had an amazing year in 2002, it's entirely possible that he had moments of pitching absurdity that wouldn't resurface until he was a Giant.

Pretty accurate summary of what it says without reading it. I actually really like Law as a baseball writer and his does great boardgame reviews. His movie reviews I don't really care about.
