  • Great lines from a song

Every time I hear, "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab I love their line about Catholic School. I also really like the hook of the Black Keys, "Next Girl".

What are some best lyrics of all time?

    Beck, "Loser"

Saving all your food stamps and burnin' down the trailer park. Yo. Cut it.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

Will be nothing like my "ex-girl."

Brothers is piled deep with awesome lyrics.

The couple screamed but it was far too late, a jealous heart did retaliate.
You can watch her strut but keep your mouth shut or it's ruination day.
These blood red eyes don't see so good, but what's worse is if they could.
A sinister kid is a kid who, runs to meet his maker, a drop dead sprint from the day he's born straight into his maker's arms.
Anyway, bunch of good ones, but my favorite lyric from last year came courtesy of The National:

      Don't be bitter, Anna
      I know how you think
You're waiting for Radio City to sink
You'll find commiseration in everyone's eyes
The storm will suck the pretty girls into the sky
I guess that's more a verse than a line, and I have no idea what it means, but the delivery of it in the context of the song I find exceptional.

And I think pretty much every line in the Avett's Perfect Space is pretty great, but I particularly love the "I wanna have pride, like my mother has, and not like the kind in the bible that turns you bad."
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

        Rick Springfield - Jessie's Girl

"You know, I feel so dirty when they start talking cute
I wanna tell her that I love her but the point is probably moot."

Not very clever; I just like that he incorporated "moot" into the lyrics.
"You interns are like swallows. You shit all over my patients for six weeks and then fly off."

"Don't be sorry, it's not your fault. It's my fault for overestimating your competence."

The chorus of "Vindicated" by Dashboard Confessional

          I am Vindicated
          I am selfish
          I am wrong
          I am right
          I swear I'm right
I swear I knew it all along

          And I am flawed
But I am cleaning up so well
I am seeing in me now the things you swore you saw yourself

          So clear
"The first thing I learned upon becoming a head coach after fifteen years as an assistant was the enormous difference between making a suggestion and making a decision."

"They talk about the economy this year. Hey, my hairline is in recession, my waistline is in inflation. Altogether, I'm in a depression."

"I like to bike. I could beat Lance Armstrong, only because he couldn't pass me if he was behind me."

So this is where all the "mute" / "moot" confusion comes from!
If we disagree on something, it's because you're wrong.

I love a few of the lyrics of the little known Count Bass D. Of course some of them are a little outdated, but still great. My favorite lyric is this one.

                Spoiler for Language:
Maybe one day I'll look up and manage money better
Because there are so many times, I fuck it up like Chris Webber

Cole Porter was a gifted song writer. His lyrics are amazing, and this one deserves a moment of silence out of respect for its complexity, rhyme, meter, and cleverness.

I feel a sudden urge to sing the kind of ditty that invokes the Spring
So, control your desire to curse while I crucify the verse
This verse I've started seems to me the 'Tin Pan-tithesis' of melody
So to spare you all the pain, I'll skip the darn thing and sing the refrain

The night is young, the skies are clear
And if you want to go walkin', dear
                  It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-lovely
That he was able to combine "Tin Pan" with "Antithesis" to describe how different his song was from the vaudeville style just makes my jaw drop. Gifted beyond measure.
"Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.

You know we're having good days, and we hope they're gonna last
Our future still looks brighter than our past
I feel no need to worry, no reason to be sad
                    Our memories remind us
Maybe road life's not so bad

                      "It wasn't really so.
                      But it seemed to me.
Popcorn, popping on the apricot tree."

Great allusion there. Someone was on top of their game.

                        Two Barenaked Ladies songs:

"He could get away with murder one,
And you would clean the smoking gun"
                        - Off the Hook

"Though we share the same memories,
And I swear that's her face.
Did you bury the one that I love,
And fall asleep in her space?"
                        - Have You Seen My Love
"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."
"You are an intemperate, unscientific poster who makes light of very serious matters.”

The Roof is on Fire by The Bloodhound Gang is only great for this:
I'm not black like Barry White no I am white like Frank Black is,
So if man is five and the Devil is six than that must make me seven
                          This honkey's gone to heaven
                          And speaking of The Pixies...

I've always thought this line was sexy
Run outside in the desert heat
Make your dress all wet and send it to me
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.
                          -Teenage Dirtbag

I use love The Pixies and constantly played their CDs. Since there seems at least F-bomb or overt sexual allusion in every song, I rarely put them on anymore. What a fantastic band, though.
