The Tree of Life

The Foyer references to Masonry and The Tree of Life reminded me of the new Terrence Malick film that hits the screens at the end of next month. I saw the excellent trailer last night and was very intrigued; parts of it look like a kind of temple film.

I have mixed feelings about Malick's films, but there's no doubt he's a cinematic genius. This movie's story line is especially appealing to me: a boy whose idyllic youth gives way to disillusionment and then reconciliation. Per Wikipedia: From this story is that of adult Jack, a lost soul in a modern world, seeking to discover amid the changing scenes of time that which does not change: the eternal scheme of which we are a part. When he sees all that has gone into our world’s preparation, each thing appears a miracle—precious, incomparable. Jack, with his new understanding, is able to forgive his father and take his first steps on the path of life.

It may prove to be a snooze, but I intend to see it upon its release.

Yeah, I'll see it, too. Malick films always get such hype (the once in a blue moon that they come out) that the intrigue is there. I've seen the trailer two or three times and never once understood what's going on but always been curious to find out.

Malick's films always get hype because the man delivers. He's only made four features and he's knocked it out of the park every single time. Seeing The New World was one of the greatest theatergoing experiences I've had and I can't wait for Tree of Life. When I finally get a new TV, Days of Heaven will be one of the first Blu-rays I buy.

Das Rheingold was used sublimely at the beginning and end of The New World. It was epic, in fact. I also really, really like The Thin Red Line.

I'm looking forward to "The Tree of Life." Check the movie poster...

Badlands has remained my favorite Malick film...perhaps because I'm from that part of the country the story is based upon.

As far as movies go, I find few things more exciting than the arrival of a film that
has dramatically polarized audiences. I can't wait.

When the Thin Red Line came out, I compared it to War and Peace, particularly when, in life-or-death scenes, Malick often cuts to waving grass, or the sound of crickets, or trees rustling. Tolstoy does this as well, in War and Peace. When Pierre is being shot at and is afraid for his life as he lays in the mud, he then starts looking at the mud and the earth and the brush and hears birdsong.

One of the reviews of Tree of Life says:

Desert rock formations, rushing streams, sunflowers waving gently in the sun, and all sorts of cradle-of-life folderol are the things that really rock his world — he cuts to them whenever he needs to try to explain the inexplicable, which is often.

I get the feeling Malick will expound on his imagery of nature when contemplating the frailness of man's existence in this new movie.

The Thin Red Line was one of my favorite movies of the 90's. Quotes abound but one of my favorites:

"We were a family. How'd it break up and come apart, so that now we're turned against each other? Each standing in the other's light. How'd we lose that good that was given us? Let it slip away. Scattered it, careless. What's keepin' us from reaching out, touching the glory?"

Watching a Malick film is an event, not a temporary distraction.

I will most definitely be seeing this movie.

I wish Malick had stayed away from Brad Pitt, who never seems capable of sublimating his Brad Pittness when it comes to filling a role. Sometimes that works, when the Pittness plays into the character (Burn After Reading, Inglourious Basterds), but usually it doesn't (Benjamin Button, Jesse James).

After Benji Button, it has gotten to the point that, unless there are other actors or a director whose work I really want to see, the presence of Brad Pitt will actually decrease the likelihood that I will watch a movie.
