  • The last season has sucked, but I don't particularly have an issue with how they ended it.

      This imdb chart from the Ringer is quite the indictment of the last season.

      If you had to guess the seven best episodes of the series, most people would get about five of them. According to the chart, in some order (sometimes not the actual names of the episodes):

      Battle of Blackwater;
      Red Wedding;
      Hardhome;
      Hold the Door;
      Battle of the Bastards;
      Cersei blows up the Sept of Baelor;
      Loot Train.

      There are three to four episodes from Season 4 that look like they're rated pretty closely to Hold the Door and Blackwater. I felt Season 4 was the Game of Thrones peak, though Season 6 came really, really close.

      Regarding the last season, only one episode was rated on the level or a bit higher than any episode from any other season -- episode 2 which barely edges out the episode when Sansa was raped.

      Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

        Woah, that is pretty telling.

        This last season was like what would happen with me at times when writing a pointlesss undergrad paper in college. I’d reach the word or page count and just shove out a hurried ending and conclusion.

        It’s a shame. Still, what an amazing series.

        • This reminds me what fantastic episodes there were in this series. Spine tingling moments all throughout-- when Jaime loses his hand, when Bran gets pushed, Cersei blowing up the Sept-- exciting television done right. I think the ending was just fine. Rushed and diluted, but appropriate. An example of a bungled ending is Dexter. That was the biggest crime of that whole series.

            I never bothered with Dexter. The Hollywood portrayal of the sociopath/psychopath often annoys me. Is it pretty awesome?

            • Here's another list that actually ranks the episodes. As it turns out, The Door and Blackwater are tied with four episodes from Season 4. Of the final five episodes of Season 4, three were rated at 9.7 and one was 9.6. The last half of season 4 was fantastic. They mislabeled The Lion and the Rose, that's the episode where Joffrey dies.

                The first couple seasons were amazing peaking with the John Lithgow season. After that it was flaming turd. Worst ending ever. It was so awful and a complete WTF. It made the Lost ending seem brilliant in comparison.

                  ^ pretty much. I loved Dexter during its heyday. I think I caught the first couple seasons binge-style online, and then stayed current all the way through the end. I didn't think I'd like it, but then couldn't get enough. It's got humor, fun dialogue, amazing production value, and suspense. Even with the *true* dumpster fire of an ending (they switched out all their writers at some point toward the end. It was so. bad. GOT fans are spoiled if they think anything in GOT resembles a dumpster fire), I still consider it one of my favorite series.

                    Agree on all points. That Lithgow season was fantastic.

                      I'd rank the seasons this way on that show:

                      Season 1: great
                      Season 2: average
                      Season 3: average
                      Season 4: great
                      Season 5: below average
                      Season 6: below average
                      Season 7: awful
                      Season 8: fucking awful

                        • Ran through this in a week or two back in May when I had the Rona. Once or twice an episode I would literally laugh out loud that we banned a regular good poster because he posted a spoiler to a show that was okish 1-6 and absolute shit 7-8. Tyrian is awesome.

                            It was a joke. He came back (was unbanned).

                              • As a non-GOT watched I don’t know where or when then all is supposed to take place. But isn’t it …well…a make believe land with dragons and trolls and stuff?
                                "You can’t ignore the violence that was perpetrated on women by men in that time," co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik said. "It shouldn’t be downplayed and it shouldn’t be glorified.

                                It seems pretty easy to ignore to me. Since none of its real.
