Theirf best song imo is across the universe. I also think ther at least two covers of that song that I like better than the original.

The Beatles and the British Invasion commenced when I was in sixth grade, just when puberty was beginning to strike and my prime directive was to be seen as "cool." So I bought the first Beatles album and was a loyal fan (but not a screaming idiot, that was for the womenfolk) pretty much from the beginning.

In the '80s, I was stuck at a SIL's wedding reception with another reluctant brother-in-law (not the groom). We entertained ourselves by seeing how many Beatles songs we knew the words to (one verse and a chorus, minimum). We stopped after we hit something like 110 songs.

I don't mind the haters, but no one can question the huge impact the Beatles had, for better or worse, on my generation. BTW, the movie Nowhere Boy, a nice biopic of John Lennon's formative years, begins with a single electric guitar chord--it's the same chord that opens "Hard Day's Night." It's amazing how hearing a single chord releases a flood of memories and emotions; that one certainly did.

I was watching American Idol last week (don't ask), and I was shocked when several of the contestants said they had "never" heard a Beatles song.

Had any of them (kinda) heard of Zac Efron?

My five favorite Beatles songs (in no particular order):

                Hard Day's Night
                Norwegian Wood
                Drive My Car
                While My Guitar Gently Weeps
                Can't Buy Me Love

                The next five:

                In My Life
                Hello Goodbye
                Hey Jude
                Penny Lane
                Something
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                  Talk about overrated...

As long as we're naming overrated groups from the era, I'll help you out with #6 -- Grateful Dead.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I wouldn't diagree with you on that (although I really, really enjoy led zeppelin).

But has anyone started a thread in their honor? (Let me consult Mark Grace.)

I'm not saying Zeppelin is overrated. I've never understood the love for either the Dead, the Stones, or the Who. I can name maybe 2 or 3 songs that I can even stand from any of them--seriously unlistenable.

                          Oh, don't get so bitter.

I think there was a thread at one point about all the artists they ripped off.

Truth be told however, I'd rather listen to Led Zeppelin or Eric Clapton than the Beatles. IMO, one of the very best and perhaps my favorite Beatles songs actually included Clapton on guitar (While My Guitar Gently Weeps).

I like a total of two Who songs -- one of which is one of my personal top 5 favorite songs Baba O'Riley (Teenage Wasteland). But, I agree that The Who was kind of overrated.

                            The Rolling Stones? Meh.

I'd give Nowhere Boy a B+, definitely a worthy Netflix choice for anyone at all interested in the Beatles (otherwise, move on). The kid who plays John does a very good job, and the Beatles back story was very interesting. Not a great film, but a good one.
