Thanks for mentioning professor/Dr. Charles Metten. I didn't know him well, but his Intro. to Film class had a profound impact on me. We had a few discussions during his open office hours. I briefly considered changing majors for a fourth time to study film but ultimately opted to stay on my current academic course and graduate. I enjoyed his class immensely and would show up to some of his film classes during my last year at BYU just to hear him lecture.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostI assumed it had all of those negatives when it came out while I was an undergrad, but Charles Metten, then the head of BYU's theater department and for whom I was briefly a research assistant, said it was a VERY good movie with a variety of surprising strengths. He was right.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

Finally got around to watching When They See Us, the mini-series about the Central Park 5. Gut-wrenching to watch, but it is really well done. I especially like how they focused on their lives after prison prior to the overturning of the convictions. A minority with a prison record has an incredibly difficult time surviving. Tragic when this happens to innocent people."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

I'm impressed by how many new movies and shows Netflix keeps cranking out, and I was initially impressed by one of its latest offerings, Laundromat. It's a Steven Soderbergh film with a cast that includes Meryl Streep, Gary Oldman, Antonio Banderas, James Cromwell, and other notables. How could it miss? But miss it does. It's tries to be a Big Short-style critique of corporate money laundering and tax avoidance, and in the late going it touches on the Panama Papers, the expose a few years back about how people were using shell companies in foreign countries to hide assets. But the pacing is slow, the dialogue flat, and the storyline is a confusing mess, not to mention that it gets some of the legal and tax aspects wrong. Its stupid conclusion will, I suppose, will be life-affirming for the AOC types, but it left me amazed that the whole of a movie could be infinitesimal compared to the sum of its parts. I've always been a Streep fan, but she should be embarrassed by this, especially her last scene. A big thumbs down.

Finished BB again. So good. Went straight into El Camino. Maybe it was due to watching one of the best endings of all time that I found myself not so enthralled. It was a “meh” for me.. Still enjoyable though.

Money Heist - fun and well done but some of the biggest plot holes I’ve seen in a show. But that didn’t keep me from enjoying it for the most part."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

My wife and I finished Living with Yourself starring Paul Rudd. We both liked it. Anybody else seen it?
It also has a unique soundtrack that I enjoyed.Last edited by Lost Student; 11-13-2019, 07:33 PM."Seriously, is there a bigger high on the whole face of the earth than eating a salad?"--SeattleUte

So in other words ... it was a Steven Soderbergh film? I don't understand why that guy gets so much love.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostI'm impressed by how many new movies and shows Netflix keeps cranking out, and I was initially impressed by one of its latest offerings, Laundromat. I really hate that you can't search for 3 letter words on here. It seems like you use to be able to with " " around the word. Anyway....
I really enjoyed The Spy with Sacha Baron Cohen. I've never seen him a dramatic role before, i thought he was excellent. The story of Eli Cohen (no relation) is fascinating. After the series was over I read several articles about Eli, I had no idea he is still considered an Israeli hero. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I would recommend checking it out. it is well worth the watch

ha, I watched the whole thing and loved the series, but it didn't even dawn on me that the lead actor was Sacha Baron Cohen. He did a magnificent job.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostI really hate that you can't search for 3 letter words on here. It seems like you use to be able to with " " around the word. That's a problem inherent in the website software being used. I have that complaint on a lot of forums.Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostI really hate that you can't search for 3 letter words on here. It seems like you use to be able to with " " around the word. Anyway....
What I would like to see is when it determines that you're looking for a three letter word, it checks a list of those it won't search for like "the", "and", etc. then allow the others to go through. There's no good reason not to be able to search for "spy", "bmw", "red", or a bunch of other reasonable three letter words.

The Devil Next Door. Interesting documentary series about the individual who was accused of being Ivan The Terrible and executed thousands of Jews.
Dude has to be him even if he lives a modest quiet life thereafter. Striking resemblance..
