Yeah, the confessions yesterday were pretty over-the-top, even for this crowd.

I get the impression they're setting the obvious selections aside (hey, jude) and discussing the ones we might overlook.

I made a vague reference to this in another thread, but a boy my wife and I were very close to was diagnosed with Leukemia about two weeks ago. A week ago he died and yesterday was his funeral. His favorite band was The Beatles and they included a couple Beatles song in his funeral service, including I'll Follow the Sun (sung as a duet by his Broadway Bound directors -- one on electric guitar, one on acoustic). The best moment, however, was the last song of the program. His 5th grade choir and all in attendance sang Let It Be accompanied by the choir director on acoustic guitar and the boy's piano teacher on piano. It was such a great moment. His choir director was rocking out more like he was at a concert than a funeral, and all the voices were just echoing around our old chapel. I bawled like a baby, but it was truly one of the most beautiful moments I have ever experienced and something I'll never forget.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I like the lyrics of Eleanor Rigby and Lady Madonna. The Beatles were brilliant. They're no U2, of course, but still.

Incidentally, I found out yesterday that Flash doesn't like The Beatles. What was I thinking? Seriously?

Eleanor Rigby is one of my top Beatles faves. That song is so sad...every time I hear it the emotion of it all strikes me. Also, the string arrangement in that one is amazing.

Another one that hasn't yet been mention, also penned by George.....Something. Frank Sinatra called The Beatles "Something" the greatest love song ever written. That is some pretty high praise coming from one of the greatest singers of all time. It has also the second-most covered Beatles tune of all-time, just behind "Yesterday."

I am glad to see some of George's stuff mentioned here in this thread.....While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Piggies, Here Comes the Sun....these are some of the greatest Beatles tunes of all and they were written by George.

I think George is the Beatle that never received enough credit, either as a contributor or as a guitarist. I guess it is hard living in the shadow of Lennon/McCartney.

And speaking of George songs, after John was killed, George released the song, "All Those Years Ago" as a tribute to his longtime friend. The song itself is a typical catchy Beatles-esque tune. But the lyrics are a beautiful and touching tribute. By the time the Beatles broke up, George was really on the outs with John and had even quit the band earlier. For years these guys hadn't even spoken to each other and had a very strained relationship. Yet after Mark Chapman assassinated John, you can feel how George is saddened by the time lost over trivial matters...time he could never get back. If you have never heard that song, check it out. I love it. And it still gets to me when I listen to the words. That part when he says, "I always looked up to you.." so dang awesome. Man, I love the Beatles.

This almost makes up for the gum in the pages.

While My Guitar Gently Weeps,
Probably top 5 Beatles song for me. Damn Clapton sounds great in this one.

Such a good song. This is one of my favorite tributes. Prince kills it.

Now you have me thinking of Lennon tribute songs. My favorites are Empty Garden by Elton John:

Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain

and The Late Great Johnny Ace by Paul Simon (a tribute to Lennon among others):

On a cold December evening
I was walking through the Christmas tide
When a stranger came up and asked me
If I'd heard John Lennon had died
And the two of us
Went to this bar
And we stayed to close the place
And every song we played
Was for The Late Great Johnny Ace

Also worthy of mention is Paul's Here today:

Funny, I disparaged Sonic Youth just a moment ago in the Grammy thread but they did a cover of Within You Without You that I love. Some of that noise I bagged on translates well through their pedals to emulate George's sitar.

Music can be very cathartic. I have this indelible image of Kim Delaney crying her eyes out to "Hey Jude" in an episode of China Beach I watched in my youth. "Taps" by a military bugler at my dad's funeral, and "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes at my grandpa's (along with a real 21-gun salute) helped us cope with the losses. I'm very sorry that you had to see a young life end. When an adult dies, there's something inside us that accepts it.....when a kid dies, man, there's this sense of loss from the life fulfillment angle that gnaws at you. I have hope and faith in the resurrection, so I believe you'll see him again. If I'm wrong, well his memory will carry on in your heart and mind, and the waybackmachine.org will preserve it electronically ad infinitum.

My ideal playlist, in order:

(I'm forgoing the required " " around song titles and all initial caps)

She came in through the bathroom window (indeed the whole second side of Abbey Road)
You've Got to hide your love away
Happiness is a Warm Gun
Hey Jude
Let it Be
Dont Pass me by
Why don't we do it in the road?
Help
Ticket to Ride
You never give me your money
Across the Universe
I loved you more
Lady Madonna
I'm only sleeping
A Day in the Life
Flying
Oh! Darling
Two of Us
I've got a feeling
All Together Now

But, honestly, after the 2nd side of Abbey Road, they're mostly the same. There are precious few songs I don't care for. If you look at the release dates for their albums, it's even more amazing that they put out a new kick-ass album every 4-7 months. No one does that anymore.
