  • Should I open my Xbox?

I know this has been addressed somewhere (maybe by AV?) but I can't seem to find the thread...

So I picked up some extra shifts after Christmas out of an emergency need that popped up, and for doing so, I get to treat myself to something. I bought a 360 with a Kinect but am now having some buyer's remorse and haven't opened it.

We already have a Wii, and I enjoy the Wii Sports and GH/RB games, but I don't play much else. Part of that is lack of time, and part of it is lack of interest. I just haven't ever been really into video games. In residency, we had a PS2 with Ghost Recon that we could play on slow call nights and that was a lot of fun, so I think I could get back into one of those types of games, but I never see myself putting in enough time to be able to stay alive with the guys on the BLOPS thread (seriously...where do you get the time???). I can see myself doing the storyline mission things though.

I chose the Xbox because it had the Kinect and I figured that it would be a better platform for my kids (9, 6, and 4). However, the 9 and 6 yo's both got DSi's for Christmas and are pretty engrossed in those, and I'm not crazy about introducing another video game system that will make the Wii and DSI seem boring. Incremental introductions for maximal effect...

So now I'm wondering if the PS3 would be a better choice. I didn't realize you had to pay for a Gold subscription to get Netflix streaming (which was how I was selling it to my wife). To my wife, the PS3 makes much more sense because I can play DVD's and get free Netflix (right?), and the kids have already got their gaming system. The Kinect sounds cool, but I don't know how long I'd be interested in it. Seems like more of a kid thing. Also, the online community on the PS3 is free (right?), so if I decide to ever venture online (really, probably doubtful), I don't have to plunk down $60 to do it.

Or, I may just buy a keyboard.

    Any advice?

Let me add a couple of things:
    1) Part of the problem I have with video games is that when I have extra time, I feel sort of obligated to spend it with my kids. I occasionally (once a month or so) travel and would definitely take it with me to play between shifts, but outside of that, it probably wouldn't see much action. Video game time would be on the Wii with my 9 yo.
    2) Ghost Recon was really fun because it wasn't all that violent. I haven't played any of the new games, but I'm hearing they're pretty graphic. Can you notch down the violence some?

I have a wii and an xbox and i don't think there's too much redundancy there. I love the wii for the simple games, the mario stuff, zelda stuff, downloadable classics, etc. Wii resort is also amazing.

I love the xbox for the games where a bit better A/V fidelity is in order re: music games like rock band or karaoke, and the first person shooters (although resident evil 4 on the wii is about as good as it gets for FPS's). I do have a gold account and rarely use it, but Netflix is a ton better on the xbox than the wii (have you looked into getting it on the wii, btw- it's also free, but the interface is difficult compared to the xbox). Downloadable content on the xbox is also really cool, and the games are just different. I wouldn't worry about it displacing the wii, but it does have a lot to offer. Plus, anymore it is my understanding that the ps3's blu-ray is now a bit outdated. My $.02.

        Thanks...that's really helpful.

We do get Netflix on the Wii, but we have that on our upstairs TV. It'd be nice to have another system downstairs to watch it, but really not essential.

If Resident Evil 4 on the Wii, maybe I should just buy that and return the Xbox? Much cheaper.

My sister has the kinect, and looks like a lot of family fun.

Sounds like you should have bought a PS3. I think you'd get more use out of it.

ha ha.. in light of your comment about excessive violence... mmm, maybe not. RE4 is all carnage in a way that makes Black Ops seem tame. (you might be able to turn it off- I can't remember)

I'm not a gore guy myself, but the game has gotten my adrenaline going like no other game I've played. It literally gives you the sensation of being scared due to the suspenseful nature (music, tone, etc.) of some of the levels.

Yeah, I agree...the Kinect Sports looks really fun. But, why not wait until my son gets a little bored of the Wii in a few years and buy something like that then?

(I realize these are questions that only I can answer for myself, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this stuff...)

Well, I still can. Haven't opened the Xbox yet. Also much cheaper sans Kinect.

Are there good FPS's on the PS3?

I actually played Resident Evil (can't remember which) about 6-7 years ago when I was living in Indiana with a teenaged kid across the street. It was pretty intense then...I can't imagine what it is now.

As CMBF will tell you, most of the great games come out on both platforms now. So you should be able to pick up most of the FPS games on either one. For me, a lot of gaming comes down to comfort. I can't stand the feel of the PS3 controller. It just doesn't sit in my hands comfortably.

I have both a PS3 and an Xbox. I do the majority of my gaming on the Xbox, but I use the PS3 more often (or just as often) for Netflix. And yes, Netflix on the PS3 is free and the interface is just as good as on the Xbox. The PS3 is also better at streaming movies that I have ripped to my hard drive, so I prefer to do that on the PS3.

I think you should have went with the PS 3. better first for your needs, a blue ray and you could always get the Move after some of the kinks are worked out.

Ok...sounds like people are leaning to PS3.

One hesitation--how cool is the Kinect? Maybe that should be my whole thread title, since that seems to be the only thing the Xbox has going for it. Any adults play it?

My boys got some money from their grandpa for Xmas and I told them that they can get an Xbox Kinect or PS Move for our game room.

I am torn and reading the reviews of each has done nothing to help me make a decision. It sounds like the Kinect is pretty awesome with major lag problems. While he Move has more games and graphics but you still have a control so kind of a glorified Wii.

Is there any rumor that Sony is developing a Kinect type interface? Or are they banking everything on the Move?
