You don't think an offer for a free Book of Mormon would appeal to a bunch of people who just watched a play about the book, which they have never read? Really? I think this is a great way to get non-base members to get exposure to the actual book and I imagine quite a few will be curious about it.

    • According to Broadway Across America, @BookofMormon Musical will play in #SLC from July 28-August 9, 2015!

I wonder if the new theater will be operational by then.

If not, then the Conference Center would be happy to host!
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

I wonder how ticket sales will go and during the play will people get up and walk out.

You better believe it will be incredibly successful during it's run in SLC.

            • I guess the new theater won't be done until Spring of 2016, so I guess it won't be held there.

              • I'm seeing this in Vegas in June. My MIL just asked if we get her a ticket. I'm pretty sure she doesn't know what it's about.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

If you haven't been yet, the Smith Center is fantastic.

Last year for our anniversary, we got season tickets. It's been really fun. Terrible seats (except for BOM musical) but yeah, it's a beautiful center.

Start spreading the news: A 2nd Mormon musical hits New York

Will another show about wacky Latter-day Saints attract the same size New York audiences as the Tony-award winning "Book of Mormon" musical?

Not likely, but creators of "Missionary in Manhattan: A Mormon Musical" seem to be having fun.

The comedy is about "the fundamentals of big hair, blind faith, and just how plural a marriage can get," promoters say, and will play for two nights — Thursday, May 8, and Wednesday, May 21 — at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, an off-off-Broadway theater in Chelsea.

The 30-minute production, written by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Brooklyn, tells the story of "three polygamist-pop stars on the hunt for their brother/husband, the father of their seven children who has gone missing in New York City."

The satirical musical, promoters say, "hysterically lampoons the institution of marriage."

That DOES sound hysterical! I bet those 30 minutes are packed with biting social commentary.

                          • Just saw this last night and...meh.
It's really strange how popular this has been. It's just not that good. None of the songs could really stand on their own. None of the characters were very interesting (maybe they are if you aren't Mormon). There were funny moments but not nearly as funny as the audience pretended. "Turn it off" is probably the most biting commentary on Mormon culture and was very funny. Hasa Diga Ebowai is a song that more need to hear to highlight the difference between First and Third World problems, as we like to frequently point out to our kids. I am Africa made me chuckle a little. However, there are funnier things to mock in Mormonism and much more respectful ways of doing it. I'm not buying Parker and Stones claim that this is a love song to Mormonism. It's not.

It's too bad. We just finished a season at the Smith Center in Vegas and this was the one I was most anticipating and ended up liking the least. I know it's not all that to win at the Tonys, but I still was hoping for more. I really wonder if this success is due to some combination of Prop 8 backlash (probably even stronger in the theater community) and wanting to take the Mitt Romneys of the world down a few notches. I also really wonder if anyone will remember this show in twenty years.

Yes. It's much ado about nothing. It's been popular because of the Romney presidency and the attendant Mormon moment, and it hit a sweet spot of simultaneously satirizing and sentimentalizing Mormonism which appealed to Mormons who don't believe core LDS teachings or practices or who find much of LDS teaching or practices or culture distasteful or not believable(progmos) and non-Mormons who have a passing interest in Mormonism. It's offputing or offensive to devout Mormons who get the satire, and weak satire to those of us who get Mormonism's dark aspects.

In 20 years it will be about as popular as Saturday's Warrior is now. This is no Cats.
