I don't put a lot of stock in box office tallies as an indicator of quality, but the fact that a Coen Bros. movie has just topped the $100 million mark makes me happy.

I normally like Coen movies, and almost always at least appreciate best picture nominees, but this one gets a big "meh" from me. Same for the Fighter, actually. It'll be interesting to see what the 5 token Oscar nominees look like, assuming that Social Network, Black Swan, Inception, Fighter, and True Grit are the actual 5.

 10. Right now looks like these seem like pretty solid bets:Originally posted by woot View PostI normally like Coen movies, and almost always at least appreciate best picture nominees, but this one gets a big "meh" from me. The Social Network
 Toy Story 3
 The King's Speech
 Inception
 Black Swan
 True Grit
 The Kid's Are All Right
 Winter's Bone

 And two of these three:

 The Town
 127 Hours
The FighterSo Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Forgot about the King's Speech. That's in my top 2 or 3 of the year for sure. Still need to see 127 hours and Kids. I loved Gone Baby Gone but The Town didn't grab me half as much. Still a mild thumbs up.Originally posted by MarkGrace View Post10. Right now looks like these seem like pretty solid bets:

Saw True Grit this weekend. My take is that it was good, but it was as I supposed. I was constantly comparing the film to the 1969 version...and how Rooster was compared to how John Wayne portrayed the character.

It was good, but, I found myself thinking it was just average. More 'realistic' than the '69 version, but, that is to be expected with the advances of special effects, etc.

If they come out with a new "Rooster Cogburn and the Lady"....I will probably not go see it."Newton's First Law of Motion: ...things at rest tend to stay at rest. Things in motion, tend to stay in motion...."

Hmm... Good motivation for me to remain active I guess.

Last night we watched the first True Grit. Not only was it my first time viewing this movie, it was also my first time watching John Wayne.

The Coen Bros made a big deal about the fact that their movie was not a remake of the original, but a remake of the book. But looking at the earlier film, it is almost exactly like the original. Same scenery, same vantage points, same camera angles. I think this is the reason why the scenery is not accurate to the book version--the original movie took place among the ponderosas.

I do like the dialogue in the second movie, which is more sparkling and witty. More true to the book I hear.

The only real difference is the ending, where it changes slightly. And in the original movie, you get why everyone calls Rooster Cogburn a fat man. Jeff Bridges is not fat by any means.

How have you managed that?Originally posted by Katy Lied View PostLast night we watched the first True Grit. Not only was it my first time viewing this movie, it was also my first time watching John Wayne....

I rewatched the original the past couple of weeks, and I'm still not sure which I like better.

As too the two Roosters, this might be my own age showing, but I think I like John Wayne's portrayal of Rooster better, but just by a smidge.

I admit my prejudices might have an effect on my choice though. John Wayne is one of my four favorite actors - the other three are Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda and Cary Grant - you might detect a pattern here Last edited by happyone; 01-10-2011, 01:01 PM. I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

I still haven't seen the original, but I sure liked the new version. I wonder if many people are going to favor John Wayne over The Dude in the same way that people gush over Sean Connery's Bond, when it seems pretty clear that Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever. I'll go ahead and rent the old True Grit so I can make an informed decision.Originally posted by happyone View PostHow have you managed that?

I watched it this weekend and I liked it. I was kind of expecting to love the new version (terrific cast, Coen brothers, etc.), but that didn't happen. The dialogue was crisp, the acting terrific, but I felt a little let down - I think my expectations were too high. With that said, I would still recommend it and I still think it is a good show.

The little girl seemed like she was trying to be Judy Garland in the Wizard of Oz. I kept expecting her to say "I'm not a witch at all."

I liked the film, a lot, but the girl didn't really do it for me. Jeff Bridges though did a great job, and I could see Barry Pepper in the eyes, but I couldn't place him until the credits. Also, Fort Smith, Arkansas doesn't look a damned thing like that. But, the highlight of the film, for me, was Barry Pepper's line, "You don't varnish your opinions.""Wuap's "problem" is that he is smart & principled & committed to a moral course of action. His actions are supposed to reflect his ethical code.
The rest of us rarely bother to think about our actions." --Solon

My wife and I saw it and enjoyed it. It seemed like the Coen brothers leveraged what they had learned with archaic vernacular in O Brother Where Art Thou when writing this script.

Actually they just copied most of the dialogue from the book.Originally posted by Indy Coug View Posthttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1403865/locations

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

This. I really did like it, but seemed let down somehow and I am not sure why.
