I finished the first book this morning. Not bad. The attention to clothing, looks, and washing clothes is not something you normally see in a novel.

I thought the film could've done a little better job explaining the Mockingjays and Rue and why Katniss missed her first arrow shot. I also think that a little bit of the inner dialogue that Katniss has thinking about Haymitch's non-verbal communication through the sponsor gifts would've been useful.

I also think the Stanley Tucci/Caesar Flickerman character is well acted/written.

There's some serious social commentary going on in the novel. The USA's place in the world, how we exploit the resources of others, our fascination with youth, beauty, love, and violence---melodrama.

You thought Lawrence was 'brilliant' and Kravitz was 'below average'? I think they were about the same and neither brilliant nor below average. I thought Kravitz was better than I expected.

She played the part well. You're not really supposed to like Catniss the character, and I thought she did that well.

Because Lenny did better than excpected doesn't mean he acted well. Like I said, cool to see a rock star in a movie, but thats it.

I disagree. I thought Kravitz was very good. And he was great in Precious.

That's funny. He sounded like he was reading his lines off a cue card. He was reading them well, but not a good performance on the whole. His greatest contribution is that he absolutely looked the part.

Kravitz as Cinna was good I thought. Cinna is supposed to be subdued and effortlessly cool, almost indifferently silent in his reassurance. I'm not saying that Kravitz was amazing, but I was comfortable with his performance in a role that, as of yet, isn't supposed to be amazing.

I finished Mockingjay this morning. Catching Fire, to me, is the best of the three. The language in Mockingjay was confusing sometimes, and I've rarely been so bored despite all of the "action" happening. It's going to be a very expensive movie to film with all of the different sets. The novel ends too abruptly. We know nothing about the future of Panem.

I think the novels are a bit more symbolic than some might think. There's serious social commentary going on. District 13 sharing all things according to need and purpose and thereby taking over the Capitol reminds me of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact taking over the US and NATO (Districts 1, 2, & 4). Conspicuous consumption is constantly attacked. A love of violence is shown to be the mark of a selfish society.

Ultimately, I couldn't care less who Katniss 'chooses' to love. The whole love triangle wasn't meant to appeal to readers like me.

I really didn't want Finnick to die. That's the only character I really wanted to know more about.

You're the only other person I've known who also likes Catching Fire the best. I think it's the strongest of the series, plot wise, and certainly because of the character introductions. And by the way, Finnick is probably my favorite character of all. Hopefully they don't ruin him in the films.

A legitimate laugh out loud. That is CA's celebrity doppelganger. I on the other hand, have that rare, rugged, handsomeness which it makes it hard to find my celebrity equivalent. Though, this is probably the closest resemblance (pre-distinguished graying).

I liked the books and thought the movie was fine. But why would the casting director hire a skinnish 5'7" kid for one of the two major roles? It makes no sense. There wasn't 6' (giant by Hollywood standards) 18YO, you could send to local salon to turn blonde, availabe? Weird casting decision.

My wife was very excited to watch the movie after reading all three books. We were both very disappointed when we left the theater. It went way too fast and didn't develop the characters very well (outside of Katniss). I didn't care at all when anyone died because there was no connection to anyone in the film.

Catching Fire with 94% on RT right now. I have read some glowing reviews and some have likened it to The Empire Strikes Back.
