Utah polygamists star in reality TV show

The makers of the hit television reality show “Jon & Kate Plus 8” are producing a new series that easily could be called “Kody & Meri & Janelle & Robyn Plus 15.”

“Sister Wives,” a seven-episode series on the TLC network, is the first reality show that follows a polygamous family. The show profiles Kody Brown and his three sister wives, a group of fundamentalist Mormons in Utah (the family does not want to reveal the city it live in).

    ...
What percentage of people in the U.S. think there's much of a difference between "fundamentalist Mormons" and the other Mormons? I think more people than not think Mormons still practice polygamy, and shows like this don't help.

On the flipside, you have a problem from a media standpoint in description, especially if the polygs self-identify as "mormons" (and I understand many do). I think most news outlets have been very good about including the "mainstream mormons renounced that stuff a century ago" tagline lately.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

He's courting his fourth wife? Man, what I wouldn't give to see that wedding invite. I wonder if they include the other three wives in the picture.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Whatever, I don't care. All the people I work with already think I'm weird because I don't drink sweet tea at lunch. If they think I'm also a polygamist, so be it. At least it has some cache. I bet most men think a polygamist is no weirder than someone who won't drink Mountain Dew.

I would absolutely love to see that montage.

He looks just cocky enough to send one out. I'll bet he wore a mullet in high school. He really should be rocking a full chin beard with his hair slicked back to complete the stereotype.

I watched recent episode of the Simpsons last night where Lisa got a film into Sundance. Skinner and Chamlers (Chalm-Skin!) tobogganed down a hill and through a church marked "Mormon." When they came out the other side their toboggan was filled with women in wedding dresses.

I'm bummed about it because we as a group have so many other fertile areas for comedy that remain untapped.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Didn't someone already post it, or was that a different family? The family looks like the picture I saw. Crap, now I'm going to have to find it or else it'll bug me.

Edit: Nevermind, I was thinking of something else. My mind is doing everything but keeping me on task today.

I bet this guy has some swagger when he's out with his ladies.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Good luck to this guy trying to spread it out. I'm shocked the fourth wife is coming into the fold.

"Man, I really want it tonight. Time to go hit up [insert name of Brunette]. Wait a sec. Have I given [insert name of Chet from Weird Science] enough attention in the past few weeks?"

The one in pink used to work at my company. Same department. I had no clue she was a polyg.

BBC already did a documentary on the family. Am I that out of touch, or is that a hideous tie?

This show makes CNN's "Fall TV shows we are looking forward to" list:
"Sister Wives" (TLC) -- A real life "Big Love"? Yes, please!

The series follows Kody Brown and his three "sister wives" -- Meri, Janelle and Christine -- who live in Utah in a house made up of apartments so that everyone and their children have their own space.

Watching Kody negotiate spending time with his trio of brides as well as their multitude of children is sure to be fascinating as they rip the covers off polygamy. The family is not breaking any laws since only one of the marriages is legal and the rest are "commitment marriages," and right off the bat there's a big announcement that will affect the family's future -- you guessed it, a fourth sister wife.

Full disclosure, we've seen the first three episodes, and already we are hooked.

"Sister Wives" premieres on September 26.

According to a description of the show, “Sister Wives” “captures the intense dynamics surrounding a man juggling three wives while attempting to keep it a secret from the outside world.”
TLC show? I think the secret is out.

I'd watch it, though like the Duggar reality show, it'll probably be really boring.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Interesting - one of the girls, in response to whether she'd like to be in a polygamist relationship when she gets married, said "Right now I would, but there's still a few years--er, a long time to come before that happens." She looked like she was 13 or 14.
