They are spending major bucks on the thing. Apparently the filming alone cost $160mm.

I'm not reading any reviews and I change the channel whenever an ad comes on. I haven't seen a trailer since the first teaser. Nolan has the benefit of the doubt so I'd rather know as little as possible going in. With the way we get bombarded with advertising for every one of the big blockbusters, it seems like the way to go. Anyone else doing the same?

Haven't seen any of them. Of course, that really doesn't mean much because I doubt I could name the director of any of my favorite films.

Perhaps folks could tell me the appeal of a movie when it comes to direction? It's already known here that I only watch a movie for pure escapism and all movies that I like pretty much look the same to me.

Not sure if you purposely omitted his debut feature FOLLOWING but it played the Sundance Film Festival in 1999 and put him on the map to make MEMENTO. It's an excellent little film about a writer who follows strangers around to get ideas for stories and ends up following a burglar. Things get interesting from there and the film has many of the touchstone elements of his later work (e.g. fragmented chronology, noir flourishes, etc.) Worth checking out if you like his films.

The major studios are usually so timid that they will back even the lamest film proposal (MARMADUKE anyone?) that's based on an existing property before pursuing an original screenplay. "Pre-awareness" is the watchword and so they'll stoop to making movies based on board games (MONOPOLY and BATTLESHIP are both coming soon) just because they think that it will cost them fewer marketing dollars since the potential audiences are already familiar with the title. Whatever you think of INCEPTION and AVATAR, it's nice that some of the big name directors are interested in pursuing original stories.

From what I've heard - even from those who loved it - Avatar was just MSNBC talking points.
