    2. Don't know who this is. A little weird. Not feeling it.
    3. Same as 2 except I like it.
    4. Again, don't know who this is. But I really like it. More than track 3.
    5. I like the crescendo as this song builds from the start. Sounds added layer by layer. Very cool. Don't know who this is. I am beginning to wonder if I'll recognize anything else on this album, not that I care or it matters but I am certainly out of the loop.
    6. DNKWTI. Instrumental. Kind of jazzy. Interesting.
    7. Definitely Gorillaz. I have not heard this before.
    8. DNKWTI. Not my favorite. Took about 4 minutes to get into the song. And then the inaudible line just loops.
    9. Black Keys - Good song. I like it. I need to listen to this more.
    10. The National - I love this band so much. I am digging the new album a lot. This song sounds like it should be on Dexter or something.
    11. Joshua Ritter - I need to get this album. Maybe I'll get it before my roadtrip to Kentucky. I dig this song a lot.
    12. I feel like I should know who this is but I can't place it for some reason. It's bugging me.
    13. I don't recognize this either, but again feel like I should. I like it a lot.
    14. Upbeat and kind of poppy. Big departure from what most of the this mixtape sounds like then it starts in with Texico bitches. LOL. I like it.
    15. I want to know who this is. Of the unknowns I like this one the best thus far. It sounds kind of old, like it could have been produced 30 years ago. Has a beach, surfer vibe to it. Kind of like the old surf rock stuff.
    16. I like this one a ton. Kind of like a folk punk. I am really digging this and want to hear more. Sounds familiar but I can't place it.
    17. Wolf Parade? I haven't heard this yet. Need to check it out more.
    18. Another surf rock type tune but more electronic. Kind of a Wipeout tune to it. Interesting.
    19. Again, another one I feel I know but don't. I like it. Good ending to the mix. Starts slow and then the interesting songs begin.
    1. Dance Yrself Clean - LCD Soundsystem. Right now my song of the year. Flat. Out. Awesome.
    2. Girl I Love You - Massive Attack. First album for the trip-hop legends in 7 years isn't a total success, but I think this song kills.
    3. Riot Rhythm - Sleigh Bells. I thought you might dig that the back-beat on this feels pretty similar to Clipse's Grindin'.
    4. Odessa - Caribou
    5. Love Me Girl - Yeasayer
    6. Do The Astral Plane - Flying Lotus. An accessible track from one of the year's best albums. Does have a jazzy feel. FlyLo is a nephew of Alice Coltrane and cousin to Ravi (son of John and Alice, who actually appears on the album).
    7. Rhinestone Eyes - Gorillaz. From Plastic Beach. Insane hook.
    8. Love Cry - Four Tet. One of my fav electronica artists. This song is probably in my top 5 for the year. Love it.
    9. Tighten Up - The Black Keys. Absolutely love this album and the song.
    10. Conversation 16 - The National. The drum beat on this is so good.
    11. Change of Time - Josh Ritter. Probably an odd fit on the mix since it's the only folky type thing. But I love the guy too much to leave him out of my Shit I Like In 2010 mix.
    12. White Wolf - Retribution Gospel Choir. Side project for Alan Sparhawk from Low.
    13. Got Nuffin - Spoon. Haven't liked this record as much as the last, but this is a good track.
    14. Texico Bitches - Broken Social Scene. I rarely listen to this album because it's so damn long, but this song is a standout.
    15. Twin Peaks - Surfer Blood. This is their debut. Great little surf/psych-pop song.
    16. Stay Lucky - The Gaslight Anthem. You should definitely check these guys out if you haven't already. They are great.
    17. Ghost Pressure - Wolf Parade. You got this one before the album actually came out.
    18. It's Working - MGMT. This one also definitely has that surf rock/pop vibe to it like you said. Also has that nice spacey Syd Barrett thing as well. Feels very inspired by Piper At the Gates of Dawn.
    19. Oh Pretty Boy, You're Such a Big Boy - Menomena. Great band from Portland. This album could end up in my top 5 for the year. Very good.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

    • #1 A lame 80’s song that belongs on the soundtrack to Cover Up or Iron Eagle. I’m hoping that “Break the Ice” is a funny.

#2 R. Kelly, I hate R Kelly. I’m hoping that this isn’t going to be a mix of lame songs about sex.

#3 Crap, “Freaky Secret” Seriously. I hope these cost you double on iTunes.

#4 Another lame 80’s song about screwing in an orange grove.

#5 At least the Violent Femmes do a good song, even if it’s about staining my sheets.

#6 Nice drum machine and electric chimes. I think I remember roller skating to this song. “Wind Me Up.” “I’ll never settle for 2nd-best again.” This song is worse than anything in my entire library, including all that Christian Rock that donuthole pwned me with.

#7 Really? More 80’s crap? This isn’t even good 80’s. This is B movie credits crap. Movies that didn’t even bother releasing an LP soundtrack.

#8 This sounds like early 90’s Weezer wannabe, oh wait, I know this song. “She uses Vaseline.” Flaming Lips. This was funny in college.

#9 “Send me an Angel.” I actually liked this song 25 years ago (or whenever it was).

#10 There’s no way in hell you actually listen to this crap. Maybe once, a long time ago, but not now. No way.

#11 Is this called “Fun with drum machines?” Crap, I think I’ve heard this before. No, I think the chorus sounded a little like a chord from an Alan Parsons Project song “Don’t Answer Me.” “Come Back?”

#12 Cam’ron, “Ladies like, a man who listens and takes advice.” “Get in the car and don’t touch nothin’,” If I were drunk, this might actually be good.

#13 Good grief! This is the same dude as track #1. I know it. I hope you spent hard-earned money on this schlock. He’s probably absolutely stunned that he earned any royalties at all.

#14 Pepper. This is a damned good group. From the first note, I can recognize his voice. “Dirty Hot Sex” I already had this song. My wife hates this group because of songs like this one.

#15 It’s hard to get into a Paula Cole song about sex knowing that it’s Paula Cole singing it.

#16 Even my dentist’s office staff hate this one. “With you” or something like that.

#17 36-24-36. I dig this song. Finally, one that I like that I don’t have.

      #18 Did I mention that I hate R. Kelly?

#19 Wyclef, “This one’s going out to the strip clubs” Not his best work.

#20 Sublime. I had it when my mix maker was still in middle school.. I also understand what he’s saying, including the incorrect Spanish. “Me muera acostarme con ti.”

#21 “Doin’ It” LL Cool J. This is about as believable as Hammer’s “Pumps and a Bump.” LOL, “Damn, I love a dick down..” It’s like a classier version of Positive K’s “I Got a Man.”

#22 Ricardo Arjona, I have this album. He has some great songs about sex. “Historia del portero” is great as well. This song is the best one on the collection.

The Flaming Lips as an early '90's Weezer wannabe? I don't see it.

It took a listen or two, but ultimately I dig it.

I read an interview with Tim Smith today, and I'm happy to report that his favorite band is Radiohead. He also said OK Computer is the album that made him want to stop playing saxophone and jazz music and start playing guitar and singing.

              I knew you'd appreciate that.

Well that was disappointing. But it does turn out that Steve Nicks loves Haagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream. That's an interesting factoid.

Sorry you didn't like it. I've been out of town the last week and have the playlist on my computer. I'll post it later when I get home from work. I thought the Rad soundtrack would have been a hit. You have no idea how long and far I searched for it.

                    • I will post a review of the mix I received later today. I am busy with a big project at work right now that is going to be conducive to music. I have listened to the mix about 10 times, so time to put the pen to the paper.

                      • Much awaited I am sure...

I have no idea who my mixer was, the Theme for this mix is "Transitions". Not sure, but maybe it is a journey through my mixers formative years? I am going to guess that we are probably very near in age.

Track 1 - Beastie Boys. Don't know the name of the song, but I like it. I love me some BB. My kids dig this song.

Track 2 - No idea. I love the beat, it has an addicting guitar. Kids roll their eyes.

Track 3 - I should know who this is. I don 't. Sounds kinda U2'ish, but it isn't them. Dig the Organ.

Track 4 - I need to listen to more music I guess. Of varying styles. Not reggae but kinda? I really dig this. Good message, great song.

Track 5 - Strong intro. Fun to sing along with. I have no idea who it is, but I could listen to more of their music.

Track 6 - Nice song. Tom Petty Runnin down a Dream. First song I recognize. Dig it. Kids dig it also.

Track 7 - Tom Petty again. Different style than before. Almost sounds like a Bob Dylan song. Get me high. Love songs about smoking.

Track 8 - Good version of Ring of FIre. Don't know who it is, but I like it. Sounds like the lyrics were recorded in a hallway.

Track 9 - Love me some Johnny Cash. He is GRADE A BAD ASS. He scares Chuck Norris.

Track 10 - Love the song. I know the group but can't place it. DAMN!

Track 11 - This dude is mellow. Pall Mall and Vodka kinda mellow. Very cool, very Bluesy.

Track 12 - Who doesn't love a tamborine in a song? No idea once again, but the song doesn't suck.

Track 13 - Has to be an 80's song. Again...I LOVE 80's MUSIC. whis is this? I love it. My kids hate it. Completely dig it. Is that a xylaphone?

Track 14 - This song makes me laugh. Good stuff. I feel like I should be at a club with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in "The wedding singer." Give me more 80's. JOYRIDE!

Track 15 - This first girl on the mix. Has an 80's beat to it, but definatly a 2000's song. I like her style. My oldest really likes this song.

Track 16 - Nice remake. A likee Sexual Healing. I miss Marvin Gaye. He would have done even greater things. Good version.

Track 17 - Forever Young - Jay Z. I dig the Sting sampling. Jay Z kills it in this song. Best song of the mix. My youngest was jakked up that this wasn on here. She looked at me like I was stupid when I said I had never heard the song before.

Over all...I really dug the mix and will listen to it often. I am suprised at how I don't like some types of music unless it is presented like this. Then I take time to listen and really enjoy it, forgetting the genre that it comes from.

                        Thanks to my mix maker.

I hope to see a review of the one that I sent soon. I was afraid I was going to get killed in my review, but it can't be any worse than the review that Wuap gave.

So...on the way home we were listening to this and kinda getting an idea behind the mix..TRANSITIONS...

Track #4 mentions listening to Tom Petty songs.

Track #5 and 6 are Tom Petty songs.

Track 8 is a remake of a Johnny Cash song "Ring of Fire"...which TRANSITIONS into Track #9 with IS a Johnny Cash song "Rusty Cage" which was covered by SOUNDGARDEN who is playing a song in Track #10.

So...we are getting the idea. Now...how to tie everything else together.

Your Ring of Fire cover is probably by Social Distortion.

                            • donute, how bad did you hate that second mix? the hardcore one?
here they are. hope it didn't offend your spirit or make you cringe too much

1.Shooter Jennings and Hierophant- Wake Up!
Off of a concept album about the last night of radio broadcasting before big brother shuts down the show. Stephen narrates as the DJ, a fun album
                              2.Defeater-The Red and White Blues
Powerful gritty hardcore that sits right up next to metal and straddles it. Song is about a soldier getting geared up to go to ww2
                              3.Fd Up-No Epiphany
The whole record is kind of a bitter indictment of modern society, in a mystical sort of way
                              4.Hot Water Music-Remedy
                              HWM is amazing.
5.Sick of it All- Nobody Rules
NYHC lives on with SOIA. This songs seems a bit anti-religion, but I also take it to mean that no one overriding philosophy has all the answers about life
                              6.American Steel-Insurrection Ave.
Angry and beautifully sloppy Bay Area pop-punk. Much more raw than their later releases
                              7.Silent Majority-Arthur Trevor
Post-hardcore piece which has the stop and start baselines down to a science
                              8.Against Me!-Bitter Divisions
B-side from a record store day release. Tom Gabel, laments the great political divide that has seeped into every part of our society
9.Polar Bear Club-Heart Attack at Thirty
My favorite young hardcore band. They almost crossover into being radio friendly, but they dont commit that sin here
                              10.Clutch-Escape from the Prison Planet
I love Clutch. Blues/Metal and absurd lyrics.
                              11.Leatherface-Kill DJs
Completely underrated UK band. The title needs little background. They excoriate the music industry for their allegiance to the sanitized
12.Smoke Or Fire-What Separates Us All
A fun Boston-based pop punk band. Nothing all too insightful although they attempt some social commentary here
                              13.The Business-One Common Voice
Street rock at its best. Angry, loaded, and aimed straight at the rich man
                              14.Pressure Point-Links on a Chain
Phil Ochs cover done by a less than talented Sacto band. Included because I like the message and the fury
                              15.Gallows-London is the Reason
These guys dont sing they growl and harangue. The song conjures up a vision matching the title of the album "Grey Britain."
                              16.Avail-Subdued and Arrested
Melodic hardcore that helped me survive teenagedom. Sad, bitter and melodic
                              17.The Briggs-One Shot Down
An almost too well produced LA punk band
