What's bad about it is the fact that it's just generic alternative/grunge. The riffs, the cords...just all run-of-the-mill stuff. What's also bad about it is that it doesn't even really sound like Radiohead, but rather an attempt to be U2/Sonic Youth/The Pixies. (I get that every band has to start somewhere, so in some ways I don't blame them for that.)
If you didn't listen to radiohead until OK Computer, then maybe Pablo Honey doesn't sound like radiohead to you. To me, it sounds exactly like radiohead. Like Pablo Honey-era radiohead.
I am not sure that the band "hates" PH, as much as they resent the trappings that came along with all the creep mumbo jumbo....the fair weather fans, the lack of interest in anything other than that one song.
Anyhow, it ultimately comes down to preference but I have found that almost without exception, the person that is down on PH is the one that showed up 3 albums later.
ps I've seen mogwai live. I think I shared that story with you. a very self-serious band if I ever did see one. Their fans get all upset if you aren't quiet during certain parts of songs. We were at this mogwai show in LA (I wanted the shirt that said Mogwai are Wonderful) and this small group of people asked us to be quiet during the opening song. Of a concert.
I was worried I was going to get busted by my boss the whole time. Watched that for a sec, and since Weird Fishes kicks off the webcast, here's another random vid, the debut of Weird Fishes:
Maybe I don't want to go to a show with you!
