I actually watched the entire show linked by Steel last night. It was great. It also got me thinking that since its in HD, and since I've recently linked my tv to my PC, I could start watching a lot of those shows in my living room!

Those TV screens have some bizarre stuff going on. And damn that song is sad.

Just finished watching the whole thing. So incredible.

I wish I could figure out how to do that. Much better than watching on a computer screen.

I even bought the Glasto show on DVD -- even though the whole thing is free on you tube -- because I was sick of watching it on my computer.

I do it through my PS3/xbox. But I don't think you're a gamer, so you probably don't have either of those. A Wii would work too. Some tv's can do it, and some blu-ray players can do it too.

            The original Motion Picture Soundtrack:

Played on guitar and with an extra verse. Also, at that point Thom apparently thought white wine went better with his sleeping pills than red.

This version was demoed around the same time as Creep, and according to some dates back to On A Friday (which would make sense since much of the Pablo Honey-era stuff does).

I've posted this before, and it's very old, but since I'm watching Radiohead vids right now and it's one of my favorites, I'm throwing it down here.

One of the few Pablo Honey tracks that hinted toward their future brilliance, and IMO the song from that album which has held up the best. I have no idea how many times I've watched that clip, but it is a ton.

              headphones on, volume up, play.

We've needed a dedicated Radiohead thread for a while now. I nominate this one.

I'm sure the Radiohead afficionados have all seen this video, but this is one of the ones I've actually watched several times. In Rainbows might be my favorite RH album, so that's probably why I like it so much. The slow-mo transition scenes are a little creepy to me though.

It stuff like seeing all these full Radiohead shows on youtube that pisses me off even more that Wynton Marsalis murdered jazz and that Ken Burns assisted him in murdering jazz. Turning a genre into a museum piece isn't going to bring in new fans. Radiohead is adventurous enough and popular enough that I have no doubt that people could get into stuff like MMW and some of less weird Zorn-type stuff. However, with the jazz conversation being dominated by guys like Marsalis people will never be exposed to this stuff that could actually get an audience.

In short, I want multiple full MMW concerts, Zorn shows, and other stuff that I want on youtube and I blame Wynton Marsalis.

This isn't to say there isn't live stuff of MMW, but not nearly enough.

                    Slagging Pablo Honey: boo!

It is a great disc. What about it is bad? If you are comparing Pablo Honey to Kid A or OKC, then it isn't going to be "as" good. If you are simply listening to it on its own, what is the deal? I really like Pablo Honey. Just because Sgt Pepper was complex and layered doesn't make I Wanna Hold Your Hand a bad song.

Lurgee, Ripcord, Anyone can Play guitar, creep, blow out, etc....these are all great songs, even today.

At earlier radiohead shows, songs like anyone can play guitar and ripcord were anthems....staples in most setlists and definite crowd faves. Nowadays, I would much rather hear some of those older setlist tunes. When radiohead played creep at the Hollywood Bowl show for the HTTT tour, everyone went bananas. People still love the Pablo Honey stuff because that is where it all began.

You don't understand. You've no ripcord!

I watched this live while I was at work because it didn't dawn on me that it would be on you tube the very next day. I was worried I was going to get busted by my boss the whole time. Watched that for a sec, and since Weird Fishes kicks off the webcast, here's another random vid, the debut of Weird Fishes:

Its easy to go forward from Pablo Honey, but difficult to go backwards. When you've set the bar at a certain height with your first RH disc its hard to take a "step back" with the band.

Ripcord is a good song though.

I guess I don't view it as a step back, although perhaps some do. Pablo Honey was a HUGE album. When creep dropped the second time in America, for whatever reason, it caught fire big time and became a college radio staple. Their "Iron Lung" is a big part of their history.

I was texting/sexting with MarkGrace at the In Rainbows Hollywood Bowl show (radiohead loves the hollywood bowl, apparently) and excitedly texted him that they were playing Planet Telex. It had been such a long time since I had seen them do Planet Telex. How cool is that? Their older catalog is filled with gems.

I think it is fashionable amongst some to slag on Pablo Honey but I don't get it. I know MarkGrace loves the band and he isn't dumping on the disc, but I will say that those that thumb their nose at the disc might not fully appreciate the entire catalog of the band. As Gracey has already pointed out, they had already written a lot of good stuff during the time period of OAF through PH...stuff that came out later as fantastic b-sides or album cuts.

All we are saying is give Pablo Honey a chance!

What's bad about it is the fact that it's just generic alternative/grunge. The riffs, the cords...just all run-of-the-mill stuff. What's also bad about it is that it doesn't even really sound like Radiohead, but rather an attempt to be U2/Sonic Youth/The Pixies. (I get that every band has to start somewhere, so in some ways I don't blame them for that.)

Lurgee, Ripcord, Anyone can Play guitar, creep, blow out, etc....these are all great songs, even today.
Blow Out is awesome, and even Creep has held up remarkably well, but half that album consists of throwaways. And I'm going to disagree on ACPG, that chorus is just laugh-out-loud bad (despite the otherwise incredible guitar intro).

Just because it began there, doesn't mean it had to begin there, if that makes sense. For instance, they could have made a good record and it could have all began there.

But seriously, you have On A Friday, they all go away to college, and when they get back together after graduation they need to get an album out so they go back to all that old stuff. Their mistake is that the debut should have be comprised of all new (or at least mostly new) material, instead of all those holdovers. For me, Radiohead will have always begun in earnest with the My Iron Lung ep, since on Pablo Honey they were still more On A Friday than Radiohead. Think if you could have put the best of Pablo with the great tracks from My Iron Lung -- now that could have been a good album.

Though I suppose much of this was not their fault. I know they also hated Pablo Honey, and my guess is if they could have had their way they would have worked on all new stuff for their debut. But EMI was breathing down their necks and given the time constraints and pressure to get something out as soon as possible, they've said they've come to terms with what Pablo Honey is. I give them the benefit of the doubt for those reasons, but that doesn't make it good (despite some good and even great moments). I'm pretty sure even they would tell you it is not good.

Here's one of my favorite comments from Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai:

Before I commence my rant I must say that there has never been a band that have forced me to change my mind about them as much as Radiohead. Their first album was third-rate indie that never showed any sign of the promise that was to come. From the name checking of chancers such as no-marks Strangelove and corporate tax-dodging preachers U2, they were a band that were hard to love. In the following years, however, a transmogrification of miraculous proportions took place as they became what they are now: a band that combine those rarest of bedfellows, artistic greatness and commercial success.

‘Anyone Can Play Guitar' to 'Pyramid Song'. Some trick! I can even forgive them for inspiring such musical criminals as Muse.
                            A co-signature from me.

I'm just saying that for those of us who got on the train after Pablo Honey (The Bends for me), it was a little hard to go back and appreciate the music, knowing the brilliance that lay ahead. The transition between PH and The Bends was fairly dramatic, IMO. A big departure from the brit pop they came from and that was still dominant in England.

Another example: in high school I was a big Toad the Wet Sprocket fan. I started with Dulcinea, but then went back to Fear and Pale. Those two were very similar (or similar enough) to Dulcinea that it didn't really matter to me. It was just like picking up more albums from the same band made at roughly the same time (musically). However, for the most part, Bread and Circus was difficult to get into. It was so much more immature musically than the later albums. It almost seemed like a high school band (they were only a few years out of high school by then anyway).

PH is much more musically significant and polished than Bread and Circus, but the analogy is perhaps useful.

I will admit to being too critical, but like you said, a lot of it is context. When the next six album are The Bends/Ok Computer/Kid A/Amnesiac/Hail to the Their/In Rainbows, it's hard not to look at it as vastly inferior and not exactly worthy of the rest of the catalog.

Oh well, I guess every band has to start somehwere.
