    The 82nd Annual Oscars

I confess I really enjoy the Oscars, although my love has been greatly enhanced by Tivo and DVRs. We record the entire thing, adding an additional hour for inevitable OT, then wait for an hour or two before watching. That enables us to skip over the commercials, the obscure awards given to groups of artisans flown in from Albania, and anything else that bores us. A 210-minute snoozeathon becomes 90 minutes of great entertainment. We enjoy the opening monologue (this year, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin have great potential, but they may also suck, which is also potentially entertaining), the film clips, some of the attire (Bjork’s swan, Cher’s hideousness, etc.) some of the acceptance speeches and, of course, the awards themselves. I’m looking forward to popping up the usual trough of popcorn and settling in for a fun evening Sunday. Hope you can join us.

I was going to set up polls for all the major awards, but I don’t think the demand is there for multiple Oscars threads. Instead, I’ll just do Best Picture and invite you to vote for the nominee you believe is most deserving, NOT the one you think is most likely to win. Feel free to defend your choice and post your predictions/preferences in the other categories, while mocking those of others.

Best picture? Avatar seems to be the likely winner, and that’s too bad. No question it was a great technological achievement, but the storyline, dialogue and performances were rather ordinary. With the exception of The Blind Side (which I still liked), I thought every one of the other nominees was a better overall cinematic achievement than Avatar. I acknowledge the language and violence were way over the top, but I think Inglourious Basterds was the best of the bunch.

For best director, I’d be inclined to give the award to Tarantino, but I think Kathryn Bigelow will win, and she’s deserving. I don’t think the Academy wants to give it to King of the World Cameron again, so I see a split decision on the movie/director thing, unusual but hardly unprecedented.

Of the other major awards, my prediction of what will win is followed by my personal preference in parentheses).

Best Actor: Jeff Bridges (I’d give it to him for his work as The Dude; this year I’d give it to Clooney)

    Best Actress: Bullock (Streep)

    Supporting Actress: Monique (ditto)

Supporting Actor: Waltz (ditto, and this one isn’t close)

No comment on the movies but I am really hopeful about Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.

Baldwin has one of the best dry comedic deliveries out there. The guy is seriously talented.

I think pairing him with Steve Martin could prove to be gold. Hopefully.

I agree on Alec Baldwin. You need look no further than his delivery of his Phil Collins line on 30 Rock to prove your point. He is the reason 30 Rock is funny.

Tracy Jordan: I'm gonna make you a mix tape. You like Phil Collins?
Jack: I have two ears and a heart, don't I?

I love the Oscars. It's the Super Bowl Sunday of our household. We get a ton of people over (no kids allowed), make a ton of food, fill out Oscar ballots (with my own patented scoring system) and then watch the whole damn thing. My buddy makes a mean Bananas Foster every year which is always a hit. Then at the end we give away prizes for the high and low ballot scores.

Every television event, even one as overlong and overblown as the Oscars, is fun when you watch it with a dozen of your best movie-loving friends.

As for the Best Picture race, I think the front runner is actually shaping up to be HURT LOCKER. My not-so-bold prediction: AVATAR cleans up in the technical categories but wins neither Picture nor Director.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

Hasn't this poll already been done?

I would love to see one of Up In the Air, Inglorious Basterds, or The Hurt Locker win. Up In the Air moved me the most, but the other two were great as well.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I really enjoyed A Serious Man, probably just as much as The Hurt Locker, but I had to vote for Hurt Locker because as a work of story telling and film craft, I think it is the 'better' film.

The previous poll concerned how many of the nominees people had seen, although people posted about their faves.

I liked A Serious Man as well, although I'm still mulling over the ending which was very abrupt. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I see. I couldn't remember exactly what was in that last poll, just seemed familiar.

Geesh! Only on a board infested by Mormons would 'UP' be winning in this race.

Coincidentally, an acquaintance of mine (Matt) from the mission days just posted an article ranking the Best Picture nominees on the Sunstone blog, Two Guys Ranking the 2009 Best Picture Nominees, which you may find of some interest.

                        cheers.

SG, thanks for the link. Matt is one of our nephews and I hadn't seen the article. But he and his dad (with whom we've spent a lot of time) are huge movie buffs and it's always fun to go to movies with them.

I have a bit of a dilemma right now. My good friend and his wife want to have an Oscar party with us. They are big movie buffs, but my wife and I are not. I have watched parts of the Oscars in the past, but have never been that into it. We also try to keep the TV off on most Sundays, but it's been on the last month, thanks the the Super Bowl and Olympics. We watched the Super Bowl with these same friends and my wife and I enjoy their company very much.

Anyways, I would love to do this but my wife is feeling apprehensive/guilty about the whole thing. It would help if I had some sort of moral high ground to stake my claim on, but I can't remember if PAC is a former bishop or just in the bishopric. I don't think the latter is enough to sway her, but hearing a former bishop likes to party it up with friends on Oscar night might just be what pushes this over the top.

Party on. And while I am now a minister without portfolio, I believe I will remain a bishop until Levi's boys get around to making an offering. What better way to observe the Sabbath evening than to fellowship with family, good friends, and maybe a neighbor or two? Have your For The Strength of Youth booklets open and keep track of how many dress code and language violations you can spot.

And I suspect Bishop Vandelay will offer his blessing as well. But stay away from Bishop McClain; he's too new to want to venture out to the edge.

In addition, how will we know which movies we should seek after due to their being "virtuous, lovely or of good report" unless we see which ones win Academy Awards? See, the whole ceremony is really a way of helping us fulfill the 13th Article of Faith.
