I am almost there with you. I saw Up.
What's to explain? It's a bunch of people, most of whom you've never met, who are just as likely to be homicidal maniacs as they are to be normal everyday people, with whom you share the minutiae of your everyday life. It's totally normal, and everyone would understand.

Like some others here, I don't see many non-animated movies. I've seen Avatar, Up, and Up in the Air. I wasn't that impressed with Avatar. I liked both Up and Up in the Air a lot, but wouldn't think either would be a "Best Picture" unless the field were pretty weak.

As far as the acting nominations, I doubt I'm going to get to A SINGLE MAN or THE LAST STATION. Maybe Netflix?

Anyone seen any of the Documentary or Foreign categories?
Chocolat is really good. You should check it out.

Everyone I know who's seen it, liked it. The year it came out, I had diligently seen every movie that critics thought had any chance of being nominated for Best Picture. The goal was to have already seen the nominees when they made the announcement. Then CHOCOLAT came out of left field and scored a nomination. My bitterness lasts to this day.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

I saw District 9 and enjoyed it.

Expanding the number of nominees is all about marketing (duh). Hollywood gets more revenue when it can advertise that a film was nominated for an Academy Award.

Saw Blind Side yesterday. Great movie. That movie has a lot more meaning to me now than it would have 4 years ago.

I agree that it's about marketing, but if expanding the nominees means that a few more people see a smaller movie like AN EDUCATION or A SERIOUS MAN, then it's totally worth it. The only real useful function the Academy serves is that they sometimes give needed exposure to otherwise underseen movies.
