I have had occasion to visit some of the megachurches here in town. Like most megachurches, they have a Christian rock band at the ready and once the service begins, the bands start performing. Rather than invite any type of spirit to the service I find it to be almost comedic. It also appears as if these churches are trying to out "hip" each other. I contrast this to the Boys Choir I listened to in the Cologne Cathedral, or even the local choir at the largest Episcopal Church in town (which was extremely good). These experiences embued the service with a sense of reverence. I also appreciated the gospel choir at the local A.M.E. church. But the rock bands just don't cut it for me.

I don't think there has been a single good country music song ever written in the entire history of music, so I have to go with Country. It is the exact opposite of good music.

Some good stuff in there. People hear "country" and think the commercial-country-pop stuff, but clearly the idea of country is more expansive than that. A lot of bands I like have a country inflection to them.

And Dan, I hope you don't mean anything associated with Nashville. Since you said "machine," I'm going to take that as a no. Nashville has such a great and rich history to it. Hell, even Jack White's label is based there.

"my" church (which I haven't attended in maybe two years) had a worship band. It's an attempt to de-formalize the service, to try and tear down the barriers that prevent visitors from stepping through the door. I also like how it brings more energy to the service when the talent and numbers required for an up-tempo gospel choir aren't available.

I know this thread is about personal taste, and I respect and recognize that you don't care for them, I'm just offering a counter point-of-view.
