Ok. I talked to my brother and he says their store often has GameBoy Advance consoles in stock, but that there are apparently four different models:

Original GameBoy Advance - he says this one is the best ergonomically, but that the screen doesn't have any lighting. This one can also play GameBoy or GameBoy Color games in addition to GameBoy Advance games, though the cartridges from the older games stick out further than GBA games.

GameBoy Advance SP (frontlit screen) - They redesigned the console and added a frontlit screen. My brother claims this version isn't as ergonomically friendly, but it does include a frontlit screen and can also play the GB and GBC games.

GameBoy Advance SP (backtlit screen) - A later version of the GBA SP had a backlit screen. Same less-ergonomic design and same capacity to play GB and GBC games.

GameBoy Micro - a miniaturized version of the GBA, it's smaller and more ergonomically pleasing. Has the backlit screen but cannot play the GB and GBC games.

I've just enquired with my brother if your son's preferred games lend themselves more to any particular platform. I will return and report once I hear back from him.

He said each of those games are multi-player, which work best with either the original GBA or one of the GBA SP consoles.

Wow, thank you so much for this info. Looking at prices online, I think the back-lit SP is probably too steep.

Also, there are apparently ways to convert the original GBA to having a backlit screen, if you're daring enough.

My 12 year old nephew recently gave me and my sister a 1 hour rapid-fire summary of the history of Nintendo consoles. At least 30 minutes was on the GameBoy and the GBA and all the peripherals you could buy, especially in Japan. A GBA printer??

My brother wrote and illustrated a coloring book (available on Amazon) showing the history of gaming consoles, including Atari, NES, Sega, and a bunch of others - some of which I'd never heard of.

Sounds like my nephew has a partial interest in a classic video game store in his future. I also expect him to be friends as an adult with all the weird kids in town.

Hahaha. Reminds me of when my son would explain to me all the drama between his favorite youtubers when he was in 8th grade.

College Football 2025 is fun. My first recruiting class was a mess though, as I was trying to figure out how to properly recruit. I think that I only saved the class because I won a national championship. Also, got a few helpful players from the transfer portal, including some depth from BYU transfers that must have been unhappy with BYU's last place Big12 finish.

I think my second recruiting class will be better.

I have been lucky that my boy has spent less time on video games and more time outside with friends because four months ago the Switch 2 was the only thing on his mind. I haven't heard him say anything in two months. But that has led me to play the Switch to wind down most nights of the week. If the Switch 2 had a new 3D Mario game out now I'd be tempted to buy it.

Yeah. I guess it was the group that did Mario Odyssey so there are some similarities. I'm probably another year from purchasing a Switch 2 but I'll be really tempted if there is a 3D Mario for the holidays. But rumors are that it'll be no earlier than 2026.

been thinking about giving it a go. My sons have been massively addicted.

I just played the Red Dead Redemption 2 story again for the second time because I just love the "high honor" story arc of Arthur Morgan. So far its the only video game that that has ever made me cry...twice IYKYK.
