  • The Simpsons 20th Anniversary

20 years for an incredible animated t.v. show. Feels like just yesterday that my mom wasn't letting me watch it. Funny to think that anyone ever found anything objectionable with it.

After the episode, FOX ran a 1 hour special retrospective hosted by Morgan Spurlock (shave that mustache!). I always enjoy seeing the voice actors do their character's voices. Dan Castellaneta wore sunglasses and a hat in his (indoor) interview. Julie Kavner looks like a 50-something female Mo Rocca. Hank Azaria is the gem of the show.

They started the show talking about its origins on the Tracey Ullman Show. I remember seeing the cartoon shorts in the middle of that show. I didn't think they were particularly funny. Either way, funny to think that that show spawned something like the Simpsons, while T.U.S. has sunk into obscurity.

The Simpsons was, for a long period of time, my favorite show on t.v. While I've moved on and watch shows like Family Guy more religiously than Simps, I still enjoy the Simpsons. Watching the 20th anniversary show last night reminded me how great the show is. Sort of like coming home. I've been away for a while, but it was all very comfortable and familiar.

In honor of the 20th anniversary, please use this thread to post your favorite Simpsons lines. While this may not be my favorite line ever, it's got to be up there. Its from the episode where Krusty gets raided by the IRS and the government starts running Krusty Burger.

Homer: Lesse, I'll have four tax burgers, one IRS-wich, withhold the lettuce, four dependent-sized sodas, and a FICA-ccino.

PB: Fill out schedule B. You should receive your burgers in six to eight weeks.
The "withhold the luttuce" part always gets me.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Dig your own grave, and save!

"The only one of us who is so significant that Jeff owes us something simply because he decided to grace us with his presence is falafel." -- All-American

"I know that you are one of the cool and 'edgy' BYU fans" -- Wally

This episode aired less than a week before I went through the temple for the first time:

Upon reaching the celestial room, my brother made sure to welcomed me into the Stonecutters clan.

It was tough not to bust up laughing.

The Stone Cutters episode is quite possibly my favorite Simpsons episode. Some great lines in there. The guy from the Egg Council - "You'd better run, egg!" Also, this line is a favorite:

Homer: Why don't people like me, Marge?

Marge: Everyone likes you, you're a wonderful person.

Homer: Then why don't those stupid idiots let me in their crappy club for jerks?

The Stonecutters episode also features the show's best musical number.

Aren't you in your 20s? I assumed you were younger than 30. You watched the Tracy Ullman Show? hmm...

I am neither in my 20s, nor my 30s.

As I recall, I watched Tracey Ullman at friends' houses, although I don't recall ever sitting down to purposefully watch Tracey Ullman. I never liked it when she dressed up as a dude.

The Simpsons was a show that needed some time to get on its feet. In the first couple of years the animation changed and some of the voice actors changed, although their ratings were always good for FOX. I'm also guessing that there was a fair amount of turnover among the writers. For me, the Simpsons really hit their stride in the third season. Of course, at the time of original airing I was completely banned from watching, but now having many of the seasons on DVD I am able to retrospective analyze it and have determined that the 3rd season is where it really starts to get good.

This is an interesting point. I distinctly remember treating FOX as a third-tier network. I mean, this is the same network that aired (and still airs) COPS: the men and women of law enforcement. You could put crap on FOX that you couldn't put anywhere else.

At the same time, FOX has run through an incredible number of crappy shows. There's a bit on Family Guy, right after the show came back on after being cancelled (for the second time, I believe), about how many "quality programs" FOX has to make room for. Peter then runs through about 30 different shows that FOX aired between the time FG was cancelled and when it came back on.

Oh - I found the quote.

PETER: Everybody, I've got bad news. We've been cancelled.

LOIS: Oh no! Peter, how could they do that?

PETER: Well, unfortunately, Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We've just got to accept the fact that Fox has to make room for terrific shows like Dark Angel; Titus; Undeclared; Action; That 80's Show; Wonderfalls; Fastlane; Andy Richter Controls the Universe; Skin; Girls Club; Cracking Up; The Pitts; Firefly; Get Real; FreakyLinks; Wanda At Large; Costello; The Lone Gunmen; A Minute With Stan Hooper; Normal, Ohio; Pasadena; Harsh Realm; Keen Eddie; The Street; American Embassy; Cedric the Entertainer; The Tick; Louie; and Greg the Bunny.

                  LOIS: Is there no hope?

PETER: Well, I suppose if all those shows go down the tubes, we might have a shot.

Fox is still relatively young compared to the other networks. I think Murdoch's strategy for breaking in as a broadcast network, especially as cable and satellite were really becoming widespread alternatives to broadcast, was really a big gamble that has paid tons of dividends.

If Conan were to move over and do a late-night show on Fox their transformation will be complete. They will then have all of the same things as the rest of the main broadcast networks do. Their desire to be like the rest of the broadcast networks, in the end, may be their downfall. I mean, they put a cartoon on at prime time! They were willing to try anything. I don't know if they still have that type of programming creativity.

I like when they join the Witness Protection Program and Homer wears those shirts and hats with the "W.P.P." logo.

One of my favorites from Homer:

"When I held that gun in my hand, I felt this incredible surge of power, like God must feel when He's holding a gun.

Homer: I believe you have some sort of firearm for me.

Gun Shop Owner: According to your background check, you've been in a mental institution, frequent problems with alcohol, and beat up President Bush! (Stamps the printout.)

                          Homer: "Potentially dangerous"?!

Gun Shop Owner: Relax, that just limits you to three handguns or less.
