I'm not agreeing or disagreeing but if the first half of that movie is true then Ballard has actually been instrumental in freeing dozens of children. That of course was before he started OUR.

I don't have a problem with the fundraisers or the emotional appeals for money. Most charities do that to a degree. Sally Struthers was the master of it.

My brother did. He really liked it. We have tickets to see it on Saturday. MJ and the kids are currently watching the first 6 (or is it 7?) MI movies (actually, I think they skipped #2) in preparation for Saturday. I think they are going to be sick of MI by that time but we'll see.

I'm probably a horrible person but I don't have a desire to see Sound of Freedom and I also don't hate the Ballard guy. A lot of MJ's friends have loved SoF so she wants to see it and I initially said "no" but I think I might actually go just because I like movies and if it sucks I'll at least get a good nap out of it.

I want to see the new Indiana Jones movie but no one in my familyl wants to go. I think I can get my son to go with me if I bribe him with popcorn and a drink.

There is a line. However, that's different than cheesy appeals for money. I have no idea how much OUR spends on admin/payroll vs actually taking down human traffickers. I haven't given them money in years so I guess it's something I should find out.

Their tax filings don't look too crazy to me, though nonprofits are not an area of expertise for me (2021 is the latest reported at the link below).

Tim made $355k in salary and deferred comp in 2021 (form 990, Part VII), which is a bit higher than I would think necessary but not obscenely high. His wife's salary adds another $113k (Schedule L, Part IV).

Compensation for the executives/board members plus Tim's wife is a bit over $2 million, close to 5% of the total revenue collected by OUR.

Of their $31.4 million in expenses for the year, here's the breakdown they reported (form 990, Part IX, line 25):

Fundraising: $3.5 million
Management and general: $5 million
Program service: $22.9 million

The most curious number I see on their 2021 report was that they list their year-end balance of intangible assets to be $2,156,117 (form 990, Part X, line 14(B)). While a for-profit company can derive intangible assets from all sorts of sources (for example, acquiring goodwill from purchasing another business), I'm having difficulty thinking of what that could be for a non-profit. The only thing coming to mind is loan fees from the purchase of real estate. They did acquire real estate during 2021, but their total land buildings, and equipment at year-end are reported as $9,871,740. Paying loan fees of $2+ million to acquire real property of less than $10 million wouldn't make sense. Any ideas on what their intangible assets would be?

Saw it last night with my two teenage daughters, both of whom have a crush on 60 year old Tom Cruise.

The action is as great, Haley Atwell is a good addition, and the story is plausible (for an MI movie). I didn't know it was only a Part One (even after coming it at 2 hours 45 min) until I bought tickets. Like most movies these days, it should probably be 30 minutes shorter. And like most MI movies, the villain is a bit amorphous and a bit 2D. I did like the idea that

I saw Mission Impossible 7, it was really good, highly recommended. It's not as good as the last one -- but the last one was incredible.

Tom Cruise is a national treasure. My kids love him and his career has spanned from my childhood to now. The last four MI movies have all been good to really good. Edge of Tomorrow should have been a much bigger hit.

I am not really a Tom Cruise fan, but it is really incredible that I, an old man, saw him when I was in high school in movies like Risky Business (don't tell my parents please) and All the Right Moves, and 40 years later he is still seen as a leading man and a heartthrob.

We were looking for a comedy and decided on "No Hard Feelings", with Jennifer Lawerence, 103 minutes, a few laughs, no real thinking involved, just what we were looking for. FTR I was surprised by the JL nudity.
