Wife and I saw it last weekend. Quite entertaining. But forgive? NFW.

I'm a little beside myself that I haven't seen this yet. I will get to it.

      • I went on a WWI bender w Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast earlier this year. I want to say I took in nearly 30 hours of WWI in a short period of time, and was deeply fascinated by it. Therefore, I think 1917 is on my shortlist. Anybody seen it?

I listened to Carlin's podcasts on WWi a few months back while I was doing some reno work on my house. I found that I lacked much knowledge about that war and was horrified by the casualty counts. I have not seen 1917 yet but will as soon as it opens in my area.

          See? We have common ground!

Just a couple of staggering statistics about that war-- 20% of France's population died- basically on their own soil. So Americans calling them 'surrender monkeys' or whatever for the German occupation in WWII is pretty shallow and lacking in context. They've lost more than we can fathom. And it blows my mind that there are places it is still unsafe to go in France because of the nature of the scorched earth warfare where they would just buckle down and shoot shoot shoot bomb bomb bomb at each other for months on end with bombs, chemicals, you name it. Some French recovery corps has recovered something like 8 million shells from the ground- many undetonated- in those battle fields and there are millions more to go.

My wife and I went to Scotland last year. We rented a car and drove 1200 miles. Almost every town in Scotland has a memorial to soldiers killed in WW1. It was staggering to see how many people were lost, even in very small towns.

I am currently reading (listening to) A World Undone - a highly-rated history of WW1. Looking forward to seeing 1917.

I could never power through his WWI podcasts. He's so longwinded. Maybe I'll take another hack on my next long trip.

                • Watched "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" last night with my son. I'd seen it before but he hadn't. John Wayne. Jimmy Stewart. Lee Marvin. Great flick. I've always loved the bitter-sweet final line of the movie.

I was a little upset though, when watching one of the scenes in which Stewart's character, Ransom Stoddard, is teaching a class. He asks the class about the country's governing document, that needs amendments to change it. Here's the following dialogue:

Pompey : It was writ by Mr. Thomas Jefferson of Virginia.

Ransom Stoddard : Was written, Pompey.

Pompey : Written by Mr. Thomas Jefferson. And he called the Constitution.

Ransom Stoddard : Declaration of Independence.

Pompey : It begun with the words... "We hold these truths to be..." uhh...

                  Charlie - A Classmate : Self-evident.

Ransom Stoddard : Let him alone, Charlie.

Pompey : "Self-evident, that..." uhh... that...

Ransom Stoddard : "That all men are created equal." That's fine, Pompey.

Pompey : I knew that, Mr. Rance, but I just plumb forgot it.

Ransom Stoddard : Oh, it's all right, Pompey. A lot of people forget that part of it. You did just fine, Pompey.
No other mentions of the Constitution. Seems kind of odd for the script to ask about the Constitution, and then ignore the correct answer and go with the DofI. If they wanted that dialogue, why not just ask about the DofI in the first place?
Almost as if the screenwriters didn't know the difference between the two.

In the time you were there did you get a flavor for Scottish sentiment regarding Brexit? Staying in the EU was part of what helped win the day during that narrow referendum about remaining in the UK.

Recent election was a victory for the ages for the SNP, whose voters mostly want independence and to remain in the EU.

I wouldn't say "victory for the ages." SNP won more seats in 2015.

                          • Some friends wanted to see Knives Out last night, so even though I've already seen it, I went.

It's the gift that keeps on giving. I think knowing the outcome actually made it slightly better.

I hung out with some bigoted Scots in a pub (actually a family of construction workers with a really pissed and racist dad who wouldn't shut up about the Muslim invasion or whatever and warned 'us Americans' about letting in foreigners). Then he asked what I do and when I told him, his sons looked at him like.

                              • My visiting dad wanted to see The Other Side of Heaven, so we queued it up. It was my first time seeing it, and it was awful. Sorry Kolipoki.

Still, better outcome than when we watched The Fighting Preacher on Sunday night. I took exception to the end credits where it says that he and his wife served the longest continuous mission at 25 years. My grandparents served from when they got married to when my Grandmother died. Then my grandfather served as a labor missionary by himself to the day he died. They "founded" about 6-7 branches, now wards. But the Church doesn't have records of brown missionaries. I believe the fight started when someone mentioned white privilege.
