Watched "The Secret in Their Eyes" over the weekend. Filmed in Argentina and it won oscar for Best Foreign Film in 2009. Pace is a little slow, but I thought it was a very good film. Highly recommended.
I wasn't as much of a fan of the second and third movies as I was of the first. Same as the books, I guess. I did think that Noomi Rapace did a magnificent job.

    • David Fincher is directing the American versions of the Dragon Tattoo trilogy (Millenium trilogy). Daniel Craig is playing the reporter and the girl that played the girlfriend in The Social Network is playing Lisbeth Salander. I think they'll probably improve on the Swedish movies which actually weren't bad. The first one was the best one.

I haven't heard of Let Me In. Is it an American version of Let the Right One In? The Swedish version was excellent and I streamed it on Netflix.

Netflix's online selection of foreign movies is excellent -- definitely better than the domestic selection. If you like Asian martial arts movies, Ip Man was pretty good.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

      • Wife and I finally saw The King's Speech on Friday night. We thought it was excellent.

        • My son and I just saw "Unknown." I would have saved it for airplane, Netflix, or DVD viewing, but Kenneth Turan, the L.A. Times movie critic, wrote a good review so we decided to see it. It's really quite good, sort of in the same genre as "The Bourne Identity" movies. I think it'll do quite well. A good plot that keeps you guessing, some good twists, decently acted, and a couple of the obligatory car chases and explosions (but less of that, and more credible, than in the Bourne movies).

Meh. See it in the dollar theater.

King Arthur was a 4 movie without Clive Owen, and a 10 with him. Twas the start of my cinematic crush on Clive Owen.

            • Which one of you recommended Catfish?

We saw it, and predicted it's inevitable tragic ending about 10 minutes into the movie.

I felt very sympathetic for the "perpetrator," who had a very sad life.
I felt no sympathy for the "victim".

I think that was me. Fascinating film, and there are a ton of different ways to read it. There were times I felt sympathy and others where I just felt like I was watching a train wreck and couldn't turn away. As for predicting the ending:
                Spoiler for The end:
You predicted that the whole thing was perpetrated by a single depressed middle-aged woman? I mean, I predicted that things weren't as they seemed right off the bat, but I would never have guessed exactly how it was going to turn out.

Speaking for myself, when they got to the door of that house, I was on the edge of my seat.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

the fantasy was generated by someone who was not what they seemed. Didn't it make you suspicious that everyone's photos on Facebook were gorgeous? That everyone had a lot of money and lots of beautiful friends and was so talented and artistic?

It was sad for me that the entire overblown mess completely skipped over the fact that she was really a talented artist, and seemed to really love and care for the twins.

                    • I saw Just Go With It, exactly like the 15 Adam Sandler movies that came before it. So if you liked 50 first dates, I know pronounce you Chuck and Larry, Mr. Deeds, Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer, etc. You will like this. It had its share of laughs.

Also Brooklyn Decker is very hot:

That photo reminds me of Bo Derek in Ten.

Nothing special-- I'm just not a big Viggo Mortensen fan. Not for any good reason- he seems to be a fairly good actor. It's not him--It's me. He bugs me. I lump him in with other actors who bug me, like Matthew McCaunaghey and Steven Seagal.

Like I said, the fact that something was off was clear to me from the start, but I think my entire history of watching movies was working against me from that point.
                            Spoiler for listen:
I was convinced that they would either come across some big con artist or that they would never find any answers at all. What they actually did find is what made the film so unexpected and moving to me.

                            • "The Class"

Strangely engrossing, and while there's the presence of the "tough urban high school" cliche, it's a refreshing and uniquely-told story with a vague ending.
