We watched THE CRAZIES last night, the 2010 remake of the 1970s George Romero movie. It was a pleasant surprise. Very tightly constructed with some good scares and gore and solid performances by Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell. It was leagues ahead of all of the other dismal horror remakes of recent years (i.e. the ones produced my Michael Bay like NIGHTMARE, FRIDAY THE 13TH and TEXAS CHAINSAW.)

This one was a very solid B-movie, which I think is a rare commodity these days. It wasted very little time with setup, had a smart, economical screenplay and left my wife and me with satisfied smiles on our faces at the end.

"Frequency"

If there was ever a time this movie was good, it has passed.

It did have some highlights, though. Michael Cera referred to the Internet as "the net"; Elizabeth Mitchell played Jim Caviezel's mother; and the killer's name is Jack Shepard.

Naomi Watts can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned, and Viggo Mortensen was dynamite. Also, great ending.

I tried to watch ALTERED STATES on Netflix Instant last night but it sucked too bad for me to finish.

"Let The Right One In"

Really good. Love the visual contrast of the white snow/Nordic complexion of Oskar and the blood/Eli. And the concept of shooting the scenes from a moderate distance provided a certain emotional distance.

Eastern Promises: I think that movie failed. That scene in the lockerroom, where he is attacked while naked. This should be the ultimate in vulnerability and defenselessness. The guy is naked with no weapon or protective covering or anything. And yet, the audience doesn't doubt for a second that Viggo's not going to kick a**. The director blew a golden chance.

Plus, Viggo Mortensen, while a pretty good actor, belongs to the school of actors with uber-long torsos, which make them look really ungainly while running. Steven Seagal and Matthew McCaunaghy are the same.

And I, on the other hand, think that is one of the most stunning fight scenes in cinema and kind of key to the whole film. We may assume Viggo's going to win but he certainly takes some punishment on the way there.

Spoiler for One more thing...:

And I think the fact that he's completely naked shows how entirely he's taken on his identity in that world. He is that mob lieutenant, down to the bone, and is fully committed to his infiltration of that world. Even when he is ostensibly at his most vulnerable, he can't be taken completely off guard.

[New Mexican Disaster]

Saw "The Princess and the Frog" last night. NOt half bad. It was a little Disneyish, but most of the music was enjoyable and there was a genuine bad guy in it which I liked.
I am a little disappointed that it did not do well at the box office, because Disney may get the idea it should just turn out more formulaic crap.

I loved both of these films. I thought Eastwood was at his finest in Gran Torino. His character reminded me so much of my grandpa. I could not take my eyes off of No Country for Old Men. Great choices.

One of these scenes moved me to tears.
