I watched Sherlock Holmes last night for the first time. Exceeded low expectations because of the snappier-than-average-for-a-blockbuster dialogue (e.g.: [a threat to Holmes about being put back in jail] "if you don't fill me in, I'll have you in there playing Victoria and Albert quicker than a bookies runner." and, of course, "beneath this pillow lies the key to my release").

    • Just back from Iron Man 2. Wheeeee-haw what a wild ride.

Saw the trailer for Inception and it pushes all my buttons: worldwide shooting locations, sci-fi, Christopher Nolan. Looks like Nightmare on Elm Street meets Johnny Neumonnic meets the Thirteenth Floor.

        SPOILER REDACTION

        Did anyone else notice that?
I watched this last night, too. I made it about 40 minutes in before I decided it was crap, leaned back, and dozed off. Your post almost makes me want to go back and watch the rest of it now. Just kidding.

        • Took the boys to Iron Man 2 today. I guess it was good because they both loved it, I fell asleep for about 20 minutes, meaning it was at least 20 minutes to long.

I grew up loving the books and the character and as much as I appreciate RDJ I just couldn't see a short American playing the role of Sherlock Holmes.

But I dropped my expectations so far that when I finally watched it on a plane I kind of enjoyed it.

Yep - clearly, enjoying it relies on managing (lowering) expectations.

I actually dodged the INCEPTION trailer. It's probably the movie I'm most looking forward to this year so I'm trying to know as little about it as possible beforehand, but your description just made me giggle with excitement.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

                    Inception looks rad.

                    • I saw the Inception trailer, and I was getting more and more excited, and then later I asked my friend who saw the same trailer with me, and she said "well, looking at that trailer, meh, doesnt look that great. Just a bunch of confusion."

I thought the trailer looked great also, it did seem confusing to me but I don't usually like movies that I know the whole plot and storyline just by watching a 2 minute trailer. Plus I <3 Leo.

                        • "Match Point"

Good film. Well-casted. Rhys-Meyers was the perfect combination of confident and vulnerable; Emily Mortimer has a ton of charm; and I appreciate seeing Scarlett Johansson as the volatile temptress in his life.

Amen. Match Point is one of my top 30 movies of all time. It stands on its own for a compelling story and good craftsmanship.

But it is also one of the few movies that is overtly philosphical without being either simple-minded/self-important ("Crash" (which I liked, but c'mon)), self-indulgent ("Artificial Intelligence" (liked fine)), or way out there ("Waking Life" (which I also liked, but prolly didn't really "get")).

I've found it to be highly reference-able when you are talking with someone about whether or not tyring to be a good person is really worth it.

                              • Saw Robin Hood today. Quite the departure from traditional legend. More like The Return of Martin Guerre meets The Far Side of the World.

                                What I really liked:

                                1. Isabella's character
                                2. The ending credits. Very nice and engaging. I'm sure that I will get bored with it after seeing it in more movies, but this, my first time, was very nice.
                                3. A quote by Crowe during the movie: "Somethings afoot. Off we go!"
                                4. The depiction of the orphan boys.
                                5. Russell Crowe never gives that silly, pre-battle speech that Mel Gibson always falls for. Nothing about "Today... we defend our... LIBERTY.." (Wild cheering from soldiers with sweeping shots of peasants punctuating the air with their hoes. This did not happen.

                                What I thought was silly:
                                1. Marian's role in the battle scene
                                2. I shouldn't have watched that history channel presentation on Robin Hood prior to the movie. Especially that part about war horses vs. amblers. The knights back then never used their stallions except for war and jousting. The rest of the time they used horses with that 5th gait--the amble. Much more easy to ride for long distances. War horses were very expensive to maintain, and they were herded to the battle site, and then ridden only in battle. The liberal use of war horses in all the scenes kind of bothered me.
