I find this apostasy more troubling than SU's.

        Why?

We are moving in the next few weeks and the local Sam's club is considerably closer than the Costco. Despite that fact, I hadn't even considered the possibility of canceling my Costco membership in favor of Sam's. I'm curious to hear your reasoning.

That's funny. My wife and I had this same discussion the other day. Sams has the small segment paper towels. Less waste and more convenience.

                • We reviewed our last two year's worth of purchases at Costco and calculated that about 75% of our purchases are things we wouldn't otherwise purchase if we weren't milling around at Costco. None of the things we regularly purchase can't be purchased elsewhere. In short, Costco doesn't save us money.

Sam's is much closer to us and carries the stuff we regularly buy at Costco. Also, we'll be able to take advantage of the gas savings; we rarely get gas at Costco due to the location.

Ha! We love the paper towels.

Good call. I meant to post an update in the beef thread in time for the weekend. I was in Costco Wednesday and, though my ears were still ringing from the cacophony of an MRI that lasted slightly longer than the unabridged Audible version of Atlas Shrugged, I wrote down the prices for all their beef. You can save a dollar per lb. by buying ribeyes and strip loins whole and cutting your steaks yourself, which is a good deal if you are grilling it in the next month. Remember that retail beef prices often top out in May/June, so I wouldn't stock up much. Also, retail and packer margins are both way in the black, and there is room for some heavy discounting towards the end of June or early July if they want to clean up inventories, so I'd take a chance on finding clearance deals for your July/August beef. Until then, though, I'd buy sooner rather than later. Retail beef prices keep hitting new highs, and retailers are likely to keep pushing prices until consumers blink. This should play out in the next three to four weeks, but there is a risk of substantially higher prices for the short term.

Yep, I roll with both cards. I also let the Sams Club fall out of my wallet when I buy something at Costco. This is to let the person checking me out that I am not afraid to go to Sams. In reality though, it is bluff. 85% of my purchases are at Costco. I only get a few things at Sams.

With Husky moving to within a half mile of Costco, I'm giving the over number of his new monthly donation to around $1200. We'll have to check this in Jan and see how it's going.

                            • At a Utah BBQ Association event a few weeks ago, one of the guys told me that Sam's is a reliable place to get packer cut briskets. Sure enough we went the other day and got a 16 pounder.

I can relate. Last week my wife went to Costco for a "few things" ... she came home with a Blendtec.
