As I understand it, the process varies based on whether or not your licensing state has a sufficiently rigorous identification process to satisfy homeland security requirements. If so, then every DL is the same as a real ID. If the state gives them out like candy, they make you go in and prove you are yourself. At least that’s what Maria at the Walnut Creek DMV triage desk just told me.
I am standing in line at the dmv right now waiting to see if I have marshaled sufficient identification
My wife has a passport and a social security card with her married last name on them. When she went to get her real ID, they said they needed a marriage certificate from Utah to prove the marriage. We never got one. So, we took the one we got from the Church, which is very fancy, and they gave it to her. Then, the day before we were leaving for Europe last summer, she gets a letter in the mail saying that her drivers license is suspended due to having unpaid traffic tickets in New Jersey. I call New Jersey and after two hours on the phone (my wife was too stressed to do it herself) I find out that my wife shared an exact birthday and one-letter-different full name (Mickelle vs Michelle) (my wife has no middle name, neither did Michelle) from someone with unpaid tickets. She had to get a letter from the sheriff's office to show that she was a person in good-standing with no unpaid tickets in South Carolina (where we've lived for 13 years). Then she had to swear an affidavit in front of a notary public that she was not the person in question and that she had never, ever even so much as driven in New Jersey. Her parents had had to amend her birth certificate 9 years after she was born because the nurse in the hospital had entered "Michelle" instead of her name.
Anyhow, I'm not a fan of the Real ID process, nor the fact that NJ could just get her license cancelled without having to prove that it was her. I don't understand why the onus was on her to prove who she is, rather than New Jersey.
Doing all of this at noon on the day before we left for Europe was very stressful. When we came home 6 weeks later, we got a letter from New Jersey saying that they cleared her. She had to then go back to the DMV and they redid her drivers license.

Interesting. Thanks.

That kind of thing also shows why Red Flag laws are flawed, with no due process.
Yup. I don't have to go the the DMV in Texas. I can renew online and get the star
However, the next time you need to renew your Texas DL, you will be at the DMV. Only can renew online every other time in Texas (unless it has changed since the last time I renewed and had to wait in line at the DMV).

In Idaho, they usually let my wife renew online (except for the Star thing this last time). They always make me renew in person. I think the reason for the disparity is that she already has an eyewear restriction, whereas they want to test my eyesight every time to see if they need to add an eyewear restriction.

That's interesting. I'll have to see how it goes for me in that regard.
In California I had an eyewear restriction. In Idaho, one of my eyes was good enough to pass, so that's good enough for this state.
Military ID, Global Entry Card, two passports and now a drivers license.
For as long as we had to wait for the Global Entry interviews, it sure was simple.

The night before the interviews, my wife asked me what they were doing to ask in the interview. So I googled it, which had me expecting to tell them about where I've traveled internationally in the last five years (nowhere) and why I was applying for the pass now. They asked none of that.
Confirm name, address, take a photo, scan the passport, and I was on my way.
