Fess Up: Real Money on Virtual Goods

Interesting short piece in today's LA Times. Apparently, the ave person spent $30 last year on virtual goods.....swords, power, food, outfits, etc...at various websites ranging from MMORPGs, sims, and child-themed sites that focus on taking care of virtual pets.

This article was originally on a blog post platform and may be missing photos, graphics or links.

Has anyone here spent money on such virtual goods? Do your children? Do they have a limit as to how much money or time they can spend on these sites?

The MMORPG world is particularly fascinating, as I have read accounts of people selling "points" or gold or food or whatever on sites such as eBay.

I pay for my annual x-box live account. I think it is around $30 or so? That is about as close as I get. My children are too young to be aware of online gaming sites.
    Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

Does paying for new songs to play on Rockband count?

I don't know. This strikes me as buying a new game.

I think a better analog would be if you were to spend $10 to buy an outfit for one of your characters on Rock Band.

Come to think of it, I have purchased the new games for Fallout 3 on xbox live. I think there have been 3 of them. I have never purchased an outfit for any character on Fallout 3.

Why pay when there is so much out there for free?

I donated money to CUF, so that I can have virtual friends. Worth every penny.

Nor should you. The samples, along with a little imagination, are more than ample.

Exactly. I wasn't trying to sound "righteous." Just thrifty.

During my year of Warcraft addiction I thought about buying gold once or twice because of the time you have to invest in getting it yourself, but I never actually did it. I've said before, that game is like crack. I still dream about it from time to time and think about how I would like to start it up again. Not going to though.

Looks like the psychiatric world is rising to the challenge of treating gaming addiction.
