  • My son hooked a huge trout on a streamer a few days ago on the Fall River. He had forgotten his net, so he knew the odds were against him bringing it in. He tired it out but in the end it broke off. He's been thinking about that fish every day and implored me to go back with him today. We pulled in at 730am with the temp hovering around 32. We were the only ones there. He's hooked on stripping streamers so he went right back to it. And this is the hog he caught in the first 10 minutes:

Biggest fish he's caught. Hell, it would have been the biggest trout I've caught. It had to be 20 inches and pushing 3 pounds.
He was excited for me to try streamers. It wasn't great for me and I kept getting caught in downed trees. Once the sun came out more the fish started rising, so I switched to a dry. I could see all the fish underneath, ignoring everything I was offering them. Until this one lazily took my fly, but enough to hang on (pic in the next post because the server is being wonky):

Probably the biggest trout I've caught in Oregon. Around 17 inches. This made shivering knee deep in the river worth it.

      • That's a beautiful fish! I love the colors on trout from the river.

Ditching work and heading up to Strawberry tomorrow AM with two buddies. Hope to hit 100 fish by noon.

Oh sure, beat my score for the last 2 years in one day!

          Hope it's a good day.

Today was maybe the best day ever at strawberry. We had 100 fish in the first two hours and ended with 142. Left the lake at 12:30 pm. Non-stop actions and multiple triples. Mostly 17-20 inch cuts, with a few fat rainbows thrown in for good measure. Absolutely perfect fall weather and very few other people on the lake.

That beat the crap out of going to work.

You have to be letting them go, right? What would you do with 142 fish?
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

Yes, of course. We brought home 3 rainbows. Released everything else.

Wow I wouldn’t even know how to process catching that many fish in a day. Sounds great.

                        • When you’re sort of directionless In life, having a hard time finding a job (let alone keeping one), and living with your parents, as long as you’re a good boy to your mom by freezing your hands and unhooking her fish, that makes up for some of it:

                          • Kid number 2 might be hooked. We're in Oregon for my nephew's HS graduation, and Seattle daughter wanted to come down to take advantage of free food. We had a day to ourselves while Mrs. NWC hooked up with friends. We went to the Crooked River, and after a crash course in fly fishing basics (first time wading and not on a boat), she landed one on one of her first casts:
                            IMG_9648.jpeg
She proceeded to land 6 more, the biggest one 14 inches. She was so greedy that she left only one for me, pushing 5 inches .

It was a perfect day, perfect weather, perfect outcome for her, and one that I hope she doesn't forget. I think her mindset yesterday was to do something that I enjoyed, and I hope that she ended up catching the vision. She did ask if there were places near Seattle that she could try. Why yes, I'm sure there are. Let's run with that!
