  • New desalination filter - George Takei followers are dumb

I follow George Takei on FB. He doesn't post much, but provides a steady stream of links to various videos and clickbait, some of which can be entertaining and/or informative. The other day he posted a link to a video about a new material called a "graphene sieve" which could potentially reduce the cost of desalination. This is the video:

I usually don't read the comments, but I read few on this thread and was laughing tears after a few minutes. His ultra-liberal/green followers can be extraordinarily stupid when it comes to basic science and common sense. Here is a small sampling. Enjoy.

Fascinating but we all know itll lead to the draining of the oceans as we selfishly waste water with reckless abandon
desalinized water is useless it has no mineral content what so ever and after drinking it you often continue to feel thirsty. the ocean is not a limitless resource either and the use of fossil fuels to desalinise water is hardly going to benefit the planet. This is not the answer and its not even healthy
You do know that there is more than "just salt" in the seawater that makes it very bad for humans to drink right? Theres a whole slew of chemicals in it that also contribute to why when humans drink seawater only we generally die
That's right, provide more water so we can over populate the world even faster.More clean water will equal fewer deaths and higher birth rates. More children surviving to adulthood and more people needing food. Which mean we will need to take more water from the sea to irrigate previously unusable land. Further changing weather patterns and speeding global warming.

Sure having drinking water is important but so it planning ahead and not destroying our world.
But doesn't the ocean contain years of nuclear waste ? Not to mention years of Fukishima radiation pouring into it . But yeah get the salt out so we can drink it.
Not so sure we should drain the ocean for people to drink it. What if big water conpanies over do it and screw up the oceans?
It will throw of the balance of the salt content and eventually kill off the ecosystem and everything in it. Small scale, fine... but this cannot be "the future" because it will have disastrous effects.
That would be a catastrophe ..with all the greed in this world ..no i don't think this should be looked upon as a great idea .stop looking at the earth resources as endless ..haven't we messed up enough already ..

Man, if only the ocean were bigger and could handle all the desalinization....
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

I don't mind his feed. The alt-right doesn't have the stupid market cornered, though, clearly.

Dayton, Ohio (where I live) has a very robust capacity for graphene production. In fact, one of the very first patents for graphene production was awarded to a Gem City company. Thanks, Dayton.

OK fine, but what do you think about big greedy corporations draining the ocean?

I think I want to be on the right side of history! Think of the social capital that I gain with that.

My favorite was the comment that we should be careful about providing clean water because it will keep people from dying. It's good when the radical greenies say what they really mean.

Desalination accounts for 40% of Israel's water supply and everyone knows that's what caused the dead sea to die.

Yeah, that was my favorite one too.

he wasn't even able to consider the internal combustion engine, much less technology such as desalinization.
