Spent four nights there for a company event back in 1995 - and had a blast.

I've told the story before - but since you asked - my assigned roommate was a single guy - and he just came in and out at all hours of the night. Every morning I'd iron my shirt for the day and then I'd iron his shirt too - just like I did for my companions on my mission. Five years later and he is an Executive VP charged with closing offices and laying off 60% of the banks satellite staff. He flies into Portland and the whole branch office is getting whacked left and right 15 people gone - and I was the last person to meet with him that day and since it was after 5 - we went to dinner at the Hotel. He told me how hard it was to go around the country and lay people off - good people like you - but I'm not going to lay you off - we're going to keep you - and do you know why? No I said. He said - At the Hotel Del when we roomed together you ironed my shirt for me every day - and didn't complain once about me coming in late and waking you - I knew you were a good guy - that will do what it takes to get the job done - and I've gone out of my way to advocate for you to keep your job - because we're going to need guys like you on staff when we start our rebuilding in the future.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Hotel Del Coronado.

      That's still a cool story.

I'll bring a pigskin and we can toss it back and forth.

I actually spent some time there earlier this month! Unfortunately, I had a bad experience. We were staying elsewhere in SD for most of the trip, but booked one night at the Hotel Del so my kids could experience it. We used points for most of it, but the cost of the room was $950+! We got to the resort earlier in the day, say 2:00 p.m., and couldn't check in yet. The place was mobbed with people. The beach and beach-adjacent area was packed with people. When we finally checked in (around 7:00 pm because we we left for a bit), there was an engagement party for an Indian couple (dots, not feathers) in the ballroom. We were two floors above the ballroom, but we might as well have been inside it, the music was so loud. Seriously, you could barely hear the TV. We called to change rooms, but the hotel was sold out. They offered us ear plugs though, and the solace that the party was only scheduled to go until 11:00 p.m.

We checked right out and found a marriott somewhere else.

Hopefully you grabbed some virgin Margs across the street before you left the island. I golfed Coronado Muni with Donut Jr. when we were down there for Thanksgiving. So very municipal, but man I love that course.

I might have had a few baskets of chips over there and flirted with the waitress.

The back nine in particular is so fun at Coronado, especially in the later afternoon. And let's not forget that time that our mutual friend shot his PB while running 2 holes ahead so he could catch a flight home for church!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll ask for a room away from that corner of the hotel.

The other crazy thing about it was how, in the old section of the hotel at least, the floors and the stairs were all slanted and off-kilter. Seriously, it felt like the white roller coaster of hotels. Theoretically sound, but its appearance doesn't inspire much confidence.

i mean, what do you expect for a paltry $950/night

Seared into my memory. Him jumping up an down exaggeratedly, arms extended like he just rolled over 100k miles in an 88 Camry, then shouting back to us "Birdie!" and later texting us a picture of the scorecard, as if the accuracy of something written in pencil by him were incontrovertible.

Bo: Ukraine just bombed the s*** out of a Russian airbase. Here's an article about how this really escalates the war over there. Scary stuff.

Also Bo: Hey, if I plan a trip to a Europe a year from now, think they'll have enough electricity for me to charge my electric toothbrush?
