Hopefully the hurricanes will have slowed down by then. I've never been to the Alamo, so I'm going to make my kids suffer through that, and then we'll do a few days at the beach and head back to San Antonio for our last night there as well. If anyone has any food or tourism recommendations, I'm all ears!

Port Aransas is still struggling. That said, I was never a fan of Port A. Kinda gross.

Our favorite beach down there is Malaquite Beach, which is part of North Padre National Seashore. It wasn't as much in the path of the hurricane as Port A and Rockport. https://www.nps.gov/pais/planyourvisit/map1.htm

BTW, St Petersburg is one of the best cities I have ever visited. So incredible. I highly recommend for all you world travelers. It is on par with Paris, imo. The Hermitage is one of the top museums in the world.

Also the city is cheap. Dinner for four at a wonderful Georgian restaurant for under $30. The hostel we stayed in there was great. $17 a night for a private room with bath and free breakfast on Nevsky Prospect.
Not a big fan of hostels, unless they have private rooms.

St. Petersburg has never really been on my radar. I'll have to consider it now.

It really was incredible. I was not disappointed. It ranks up there with the top cities I have visited. Paris, London, Rome, Prague, Florence and St Petersburg are top tier in my opinon, The museums, the history, the churches, the palaces and the ease of use are all great. I'll get together some pictures and a write up of my trip and what we saw.

Is it cheap because of the sanctions, or generally cheap. Let's suppose somebody wanted to go someplace other than a hostel, did you gather the impression there are reasonably priced accommodations?

What were the top five sites or activities you enjoyed?

                  Plan:
                  Fly into Frankfurt
                  Rhine river cruise-1 day
                  Rothenburg-1 night
                  Munich - 2 nights
                  Salzburg - 1 night
                  Prague - 3 nights
                  Berlin - 4 nights

                  With some room to change.

How are you moving between cities? One of my favorite places ever was Cesky Krumlov which is roughly between Prague and Vienna/Salzburg. We stopped there once in our way driving from Prague to Vienna

I've not been up north, just down in the Bavaria region. I loved Rothenburg. I recommend Dachau while you're down in Munich as well.

                      • I'll second Rothenburg. When I was a teenager in the early '70s, we lived fairly close (Ansbach) to it and we visited several times. Salzburg is also wonderful. If you have time Berchtesgaden (near Salzburg) and the Hitler's Eagles Nest is a nice afternoon. I agree with BD, Dachau is a must see if in the Munich area! I must admit when I visited as a 14 yr old I wasn't impressed. When I went again two yrs later it was very, very humbling.

Also in Bavaria any of Mad King Ludwig's Castles are worth the time and effort - esp Neuschwanstein

I may be small, but I'm slow.

And if he goes to Werfen, he should stop by Werfen Castle, better know to us Americans as the location for Where Eagles Dare, a favorite war movie from the '60s, and the adjacent hilltop from which Julie Andrews started singing in The Sound of Music.

Having lived near Berchtesgaden and then in Salzburg for a few months (tough duty, that mission), and after repeated follow-up visits, I still know the area very well including (and I blush to admit this) pretty much every Sound of Music location. But perhaps my favorite spot in the greater Salzburg area is the lakeside town of Hallstatt, including a great gasthaus where we enjoy staying.

Unfortunately, most of the WWII Nazi locations have been torn down. On P-Days we enjoyed rooting around the old SS barracks and other remnants of the war. It boggles my mind that the time between my mission and Hitler's death is much shorter than the time between my mission and now.

There's no shame here. There are two kinds of people in the world:

1)Those who love The Sound of Music

                                and

                                2) Those who are dead inside
We all trust our own unorthodoxies.
