I never rhought I would be as uptight with money as I've become apparently. Literally everyone i speak to echos the advice here. Damnit, I'm going to have to concede to my wife on this.
Being cheap is okay. I am cheap until it comes to big stuff. And then I have a spending problem. Lol.

I research the hell out of big purchases and then make an impulse buy.

      • Two weeks ago we flew from SLC to Paris, spent three days there, then took the train to London for four days and flew home from there. We booked it through Costco and just pricing it out separately it was a good deal.

How much did you spend (if you don't mind the question)? Was that for two people?

Just think - you could have gone to Bandon Dunes for less money - and had more fun.

$6200 Both hotels were nice and downtown, both were close to the subway so it was easy to get around. It was my wife and myself.

I'm working on that, you almost have to schedule a 1 1/2 years out for a decent time but it's going to happen.

Sounds nice! That's not a bad price for being fully accommodated and not going dirtbag style like I sometimes do...

The shuttles to and from the airports were included, the train ride and $400 of credit toward a tour in London. The hotels provided breakfast in the morning and then we would piece during the day and have a nice dinner at night. It really did work out well.

                    • How long does everyone like to make their vacations? If I'm going overseas, I like to be gone a full two weeks. This is pushing it for Mrs Diddley, but that's a fairly consistent block of time for us.

We're considering taking Bo Jr and his wife with us to Japan. Bo Jr served in the Fukuoka Mission. I'm trying to figure out how long to plan--they do have two young kids that probably wouldn't go. I'm also trying to figure out what to do there. Unfortunately, the missus is going to want to spend a day or two in Tokyo Disney.

Two weeks would be great. There is so much to see. Be sure to hit up Hiroshima, Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo (in addition to Fukuoka of course).

Good grief, don't waste time at Tokyo Disneyland. They have two of those here in the states.

I'm probably the only one in the group that would prefer to skip this.

                          • 2 - 2.5 weeks is good although I start to run out of steam at the end of two weeks. We're planning close to a 3-weeker to Australia and New Zealand next year. A 3 week duration is pushing past my preferred timeline but I figure I won't get another chance to go back to that part of the world so I've got to make the most of it.

                            • Depends on the location and activity. I just did eight days in France, which turned into 10 days because of Covid. Eight is enough when we are hustling around doing touristy things and we have a babysitter at home to relieve. But a more relaxed European vacation I could do two weeks or more.

When I go to Australia I would hope to do three weeks or so just because it’s so far away and it might be a one time trip. Japan would also require me to stay two weeks since it would also likely be a one time thing.

                              • Our typical overseas trip is 15-17 day; after that trip fatigue sets in pretty heavily, especially if I'm doing a lot of driving. Our trip to Japan was unusually (and regrettably) shorter, around ten days, but we did a good job of covering Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hiroshima which were outstanding. I read Hersey's Hiroshima in grade school and it affected me deeply. Visiting the museum there, standing at ground zero, and meeting two survivors were unforgettable experiences.
