I was able to spend a few hours at the WWII museum in New Orleans today. It's well done, and they have many interesting artifacts on display. One of my favorite was Franklin Roosevelt's speech after the Pearl Harbor Bombing, with personal notes/changes in his own handwriting. "A date which will live in infamy" was not originally written as such. My very favorite was a map overlay from one of the combat commanders for his portion of the D-Day invasion, naming the objectives and boundaries, etc.

When it opened, it was the D-Day Museum, specifically. And, the Higgins Boats used in amphibious assaults were designed and made in NOLA. So, a few years later, seeing the success of it, Congress made it the National WWII museum, I believe after Katrina in a bid to boost tourism. Yep. Steven Ambrose led the charge, IIRC, on fund-raising. This was right after Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers so lots of Hollywood money rolled in. Tom Hanks made a big donation.Originally posted by wuapinmon View Post
