    Used HipChat but not the mobile client so I can't comment on battery drain. At work we use Cisco Jabber but it doesn't really support persistent chat rooms that well. HipChat does a much better job with persistent chat rooms. I hate Google Hangouts. You can't download their old chat client anymore so I just go with Pidgin for my various personal chat needs. Skype also works well but the ads that Microsoft put in make me not want to use it.
