    Chat program options

I really liked the old Google Talk. I don't like Hangouts.

What chat programs do you guys use at work or what do you like? I'm trying to find a replacement for Google Talk as they are finally shutting it down.

    features I like:
--works on both computer and phone
--messages coming to you on both phone and computer at same time, so it’s a seamless change if you are out of office or away from desk
--notifications sync, so that if you answer on your computer, your phone doesn’t keep a notification showing
--status showing desktop status available, away, not signed in…
--stand alone app on desktop, not tied to an email program

    Any recommendations for me?

I'm old school and use IRC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Relay_Chat

--works on both the computer and phone. check.
--messages go to both. check. Of course, I use an IRC bouncer so my phone doesn't have to be running the IRC app all the time.
--notification sync. Yeah, see the IRC bouncer thing.
--Status stuff. Yeah. Of course, your mileage varies with the client you use.
--Standalone app. Yeah, there are all kinds of IRC apps including the cool terminal based ones. For the full effect install something like Cathode or cool-retro-term before using one of those... Just like you are back in the 70's!

Jay Santos, if you are looking at ways to be unfaithful without getting caught easily, check out kik, whatsapp, groupme, cyberdust, or wechat. hangouts is ok but as you have obviously discovered, the wife can find that one pretty easily.

Yeah. Google incognito works well for the porn, but I need a better chat option...

Anyone use Slack of HipChat? Some of the reviews complain about battery drain, which might be a deal breaker.

Are you willing to let the government spy on you through your phone camera? If so, it sounds like facebook messenger meets pretty much all of your criteria.

I met Tim on IRC on the EFnet (later moved to the undernet). #mormon We became roommates about 2 years later.

Then, I met my wife on #mormon. She's a much better kisser than Tim.
