I was going to ask the seasoned guitar players on this board. I always thought he played crazy good guitar. Prince was huge when I was in my teens learning the guitar. Unfortunately the fact that he was an amazing guitarist didn't even register for me. All I saw was this weird pop musician with a crazy shaped guitar. It wasn't until I was back from my mission that I figured out the guy could actually play.
