    R.I.P. Phife Dawg.

A Tribe Called Quest is my favorite Hip Hop group of all-time. Phife had diabetes and a kidney transplant a few years ago, so his health has been on thin ice for the past 20 years or so. I think like most ATCQ fans I had held out hope for another album. They last hooked up for a performance on Jimmy Fallon a couple months ago.

I join you in this post. RIP to the 5 foot assassin. Somewhere in the Celestial Kingdom he and Rick Majerus are talking basketball over a pizza.

For those of us old enough to remember - The White Shadow has passed

I may be small, but I'm slow.

A veteran - whether active duty, retired, or national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to, "The United States of America ", for an amount of "up to and including my life - it's an honor."

          Gary Shandling, 66.
"They're good. They've always been good" - David Shaw.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Given that the announcement of Shandling's death came from the police, I wonder if this was self-inflicted, which would make a really sad event even worse, of course. I loved Shandling's brand of humor, and The Larry Sanders Show is one of the top television comedies of all-time--great lines, an extraordinarily strong cast, and dozens of major guest stars. I'll always regard him as Rip Torn's character (Larry Sanders' producer) did, something like, "You're not human, you're like some great mythological beast, half-man, half-desk!"

Edit: TMZ and others are reporting that the cause of death was a heart attack or other medical emergency, and that he died at the hospital after arriving there still alive.

If you like Jerry Seinfeld or Garry Shandling (and one almost certainly likes both or neither), this episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is very good, and in light of today's sad announcement, is very touching and prescient as they both look back on their careers, and how so many other great comedians have passed on.

I watched that a few weeks ago, and that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the post about his passing.

Ironically, the name of the episode was "It's Great that Gary Shandling is Still Alive".

As Shandling requested in the show, I hope there was a boxing referee at the hospital this morning doing the ten-count, waving off the count at around five, and declaring, "He's not getting up!"

General Ackbar passed away over the weekend.

I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.
