I've got your back Robin. You'll be happy to know that a good portion of the lot at my new house is paved over for RV storage. Which is good because I have to have somewhere to store my diesel pusher and boat! I am truly an environmentalist.

Can't wait to take the RV to yellowstone this summer!

Paved over is bad. It increases local heat gain (your house will be hotter and your cooling bills will be higher) and it doesn't allow the rain to go into the soil.

If you haven't paved over yet, consider pavers that will allow water to go into the ground.

Sorry FM, houses themselves are bad for the environment. You need to revert to a gravel parkway for your RV, if you can't recycle it. I would also like you to remove your house and start to develop a mud hut. Otherwise there is no entry into Findersons Environ-club.

Everybody pays, through their taxes, for socialist programs like municipal water supply. If you really want to avoid socialist programs like municipal water supplies, try watering your lawn with Evian.

That doesn't work well for me. When I change the oil I don't want it in my yard. I need the pavement so I can wash it out of my driveway into the storm gutters. I don't want that crap messing up MY property!

Petroleum products will actually green up your lawn, but avoid using them around your vegetables and fruit trees! It ruins the flavor of food (a neighbor dumped a quart near our apple tree when I was growing up. Yuck!)

Seriously, why do people ignore the ethical implications of a green luscious lawn? Immaculate lawn keepers put vanity before ethics. The writing is on the wall - lawns are an ethical disaster. Why doesn't this matter to most Mormons? When it comes to lawns, why do you put vanity and pride before ethical behavior?
You can do better. You're normally a master troll, stealthy and crafty, but this one didn't work for you. The "all chemicals are bad and destroy the environment" and "lawns waste water" mantra's are too idiotic for anyone to really buy.

Except in non-socialist states where private/co-op irrigation companies provide the non-culinary water. Weak sauce.

This thread has drifted a bit from junkie's simple question, but RF's rip on lawns and strong advocacy for xeriscaping (if not spelling) caused me to reflect, yet again, on my constant battle between acting purely out of self-interest, or purely for the greater good. When we moved here less than one year ago, this was our backyard:

We thought of several things, including a large swimming pool (too much bother, not very enviro-conscious, and I'd frighten the neighbors), xeriscaping, a lush lawn and putting green, whatever. We settled on a mix of things designed to please and offend everyone. For the RFs of the world, we have a drip system and low flow sprinklers, all set to function before dawn, to minimize water usage. We have pavers instead of concrete. Most of the plants are native and don't require much water. But I do not live lightly upon the land, and I now have the best lawn I've had, or seen, in my lifetime, along with cool lighting (low wattage), and a pondless waterfall. Pretty much every night, as the sun sets over the hills, I like walking around the track (again, pavers) that circumscribes the yard.

It's not the most envirosensitive use by a long shot, but it's much more so than it might have been. And it makes me very happy, so screw the naysayers. Plus, check out the gazebo that this C+ in jr. high wood shop built all by himself. Take that, Mr. Clift!
