    The Columbus Downtown River Project

The city of Columbus has decided that the scioto river that runs through it needs to be changed due to the stagnation of the river and the fact that it is pretty much brown all year round. So, to resolve this problem that have decided to remove the damn located just south of downtown and then will bring the rive in roughly 300 feet or so on each side of the river bank. By so doing this, they will cause the river to flow more and bring it back to its natural state.

My main issue is the fact the city is above it and unless they deal with the drainage flow from the streets above it will never become more clean. Just a faster pace of brown river. I am also not a engineer but I am nto sure how this will work. I know they are digging the middle of the river to try and make it deeper, but as they gradually take the river space away it will cause the river to rise (Right). It already has overflow problems and the dry areas now become flooded once we have good rain (Which happens a lot), so I tend to think the green space and bike/running paths they are looking to create won't work due to the flooding as the river gains more water from rain. We'll see how it goes. It has been interesting to watch..

The cool thing is that I walk the bridge daily where this construction project it. It has been fun to watch it evolve. So I decided that I would start to take pictures of the project as it changes over time. Here is the pictures I have taken so far. And I will try and take a few a week etc. to show the project as it moves along..

Playing in the water with big bulldozers etc.. These two machines kept digging up dirt and moving them around. I believe they were trying to make the river area deeper. It was interesting to watch as the drove around on the river and dig it up.. What a way to spend the day...

Has anyone graphed the decline of the number of microscopic species living in the river? I could use some more riveting information today.

This sounds like a project for KatyLied. She has a microscope with resolution. clackamascoug can help out with the actual graph.

A few shots from the bridge where I walk and a closer look from the other side..

                  [IMG][/IMG]

This shot is where the damn used to be. I wished I had gotten some shots of the bulldozer plowing through it and breaking it down..

Annnnnnnd that is all of them. I plan to post less now.. Between 2 to 3 weeks... I have found the gradual change interesting as I walk each day..

I figured some with construction background or engineering background might find this little project interesting..

Link to what its supposed to look like in the end..

If you are going to give us 50 photos, you could at least have the courtesy to host the photos offsite. You just caused a major bloat in the forum database.

OK. Had no idea it did that. I will modify to remove the usage of data. Sorry JL.

Great. While you are at it, cut it back to 3-4 photos. Most of those are redundant. And we don't need to see a close up of some gravel in the water. TIA.
