My brother's Facebook post on popular Utah names

"Here is a list of names that I feel are the ten worst names for 2008 in Utah. These are taken from the 100 most popular baby names in Utah, and these are the worst in my opinion. There are worse names in Utah, such as Bobika, Gordonine, Provona, and Lajames, but these do no make the top 100 list. To have made the top 100 list, multiple hillbillies from Panguich to Willard had to have coincidentally picked these names. Here goes:
    Boys:
Ryder, Carter, Braxton, Boston, Easton, Jaxon, Bridger, Kyler, Corbin, Kaden

    Girls:
Reagan, Kennedy, London, Valeria, Aspen, Peyton, Paisley, Brooklyn, Riley, Miley."

    End Quote

I answered the post and told him he needs to exchange Panguich and Willard with Logan to St. George. This isn't a hillbilly problem, this is a Utah/LDS problem (okay, I can already see the jokes coming here). These names are prevalent all over the Utah and I would imagine LDS circles in general.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I dont think these names have anything to do with LDS/UTah they have to do with society in general. This is not a Utah thing at all, also I dont see anything wrong with the majority of those names, in fact I know several on this site that have children with those names.

I agree. 3 of the names on their are my nieces/nephews names. They all live in Canada. They come to visit once in a while, but not very often.

Sure, the Utah LDS culture makes it up there some, but I really don't see the relation to LDS culture with most those names or any evidence that they are exclusive to Utah/LDS culture.

Many of those names are on the top 100 for the whole US.

That's funny. Sounds like a list of my nieces and nephews.

I think the name Easton is cool. I also like Beckett. Wilson. Callaway. There's a theme here.

Gidget and I always joke that the in thing to do is take a noun and add -on, -en, -don, or -den. Northden for example.

If it were up to me my kids would be named Brighton, Whistler, Aspen, Stratton, Breckenridge, etc.

That's funny. I have 2 sons and a dog on that list. FWIW I lived only 4 years in Utah and never knew anyone in Utah with those names.

I'm very anti last name first names. Hunter, Tucker, Wilson etc. etc. Apologies to those who have kids with last name first names, just not my cup of tea.

That's the only one I have in my immediate family, inside or outside Utah.

Jaxon is terrible. It's spelled Jackson. Spell it right. It's not cute if you don't, it's just stupid. Apologies to anyone who named their kid Jaxon. Sort of.

I don't have a big problem with any of the others. Of course, we were complete bandwagoners when we named our daughter Emily.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah
