The problem is, once assembled into a pack, how do you stop the mob? Spike strips are dangerous. Cops can't shoot their tires out.

These gang motorcyclists have taken all the concessions given to them due to their vulnerability on the road, and twisted them into a lethal advantage.

It sounds like the NYPD had planned ahead for this based on a simar event last year. I don't think they were going to provide official escorts but they did have check-points set up to turn away bikes that weren't street-legal.

One of the bikers has been arrested and another was paralyzed when he was driven over by the SUV.

You need to learn a little more about motorcycles. Street legal dirt bikes are very popular. I happen to own one. Look up a Suzuki DRZ-400 or KTM EXC to see what I mean.

These riders are idiots and most of them should be cited. Several should be put in jail.

Many of them do hire police escorts, especially the bigger charity rides. The behavior of the bikers in that video is nothing like what happens in most rides. People are never buzzing around, passing each other, changing lanes, etc. On city streets it's usually 2 bikes in a lane, all bikes in the same lane, no passing, no speeding.

Agreed. Good rides are well organized and have people riding in formation. You have to be able to predict what your fellow riders are going to do at any given moment, and there are specific rules and hand signals that are used. Even 1 percenters will follow them. These guys are a bunch of knuckleheads.

The biker then cuts in front of the Range Rover and, still staring at the driver, suddenly slows down. It isn’t captured on the video, but the motorcycle and SUV bumped, police said.

The motorcyclists, 20 to 30 in all, then stop on the highway, blocking the SUV’s path.
Uh, seemed like a lot more than 20 or 30.

The chase ended when the SUV exited the highway and got stuck in street traffic. The video shows one biker using his helmet to smash the driver’s window. Police said the group then pulled the man from the SUV and beat him, although that part isn’t shown on the recording posted online. The police department confirmed that the video circulating online is authentic.

That is terrible. The man was being a danger and a dumbass, but the penalty for dumbassery should not have to be paralysis. I wish he had not made the choices that led up to it.

I'm telling you, there's nothing the police can do about these morons. The NYPD have standing no pursue orders on these dirt bikes because of the danger they put the public in to evade the police. Riding on sidewalks, running red lights, it's crazy in a place as compact as Manhattan. So most of these guys ride around disobeying traffic laws with impunity while the police might be able to pick off a few on each ride. The response has to be hefty fines for anyone caught and prison time for anyone intimidating motorists like in the video. Deterrence may not end up working but it's the only recourse we have.

In this second video you can see these guys just disregarding other traffic, stop lights whatever. The Range Rover's reaction in the first video is understandable. Supposedly, they're not charging the Range Rover driver with anything.

The wife of biker Edwin Mieses, Jr., who was run over by the SUV, told reporters outside Roosevelt-St. Luke’s Hospital that her husband was likely paralyzed.

“There’s no hope for his back,” Dayana Meises said. “They crushed his spine, they broke it in two different places, so he will be forever, forever paralyzed.”

She said she wanted people to know the driver wasn’t the only victim. “Everyone wants to blame the bikers for something this man did,” she said.
I agree with Katy - it's horrible that this happened and I am sad for him that his stupid decision led to these life-long serious consequences. For his wife to call him a victim though...reminds me of people who are injured while committing a crime, like burglary, and then want to sue the person who the crime was against for not having proper safety measures in place.

Moron. Sorry he couldn't learn this lesson with simply a broken leg or something...but it was his own actions that caused the problem. Memo to motorcyclists - don't park in the middle of a freeway in front of an SUV and intimidate the SUV driver into thinking you mean him or his vehicle actual harm. It won't end well. You probably should park off to the side instead...

The terrible shame is that more of them didn't meet that same fate. Being a dumbass is one thing, deliberately endangering the lives of those who are using public streets and sidewalks is another. These gangs are out running people off the roads, assaulting drivers and pedestrians. I can only imagine the terror of the driver and his family as he was swarmed and run into by the motorcyclists.

They are lucky he only crushed one of them. While he eventually stopped, I would have continued driving over motorcycles until they went away or they were all on the ground. They put him in a seeming life or death situation with his wife and kid. The way I see it, they got off easy.

The motorcyclist not only is not a victim, but merely suffered the consequences of going out terrorizing others for kicks. Maybe his life can serve as a cautionary tale for his fellow thugs.
