For those who attended one of the church schools, did you do anything during your time there- that if you were caught- could have resulted in expulsion?

The obvious things are alcohol, drugs, and/or premarital (or extramarital) sex. What I find interesting is the least discussed, though likely most broken portion of the HC is cheating, and/or plagiarism. I'm not counting minor things like not shaving, staying in someones apartment past curfew, or not attending church.

As a former bishop, you would probably be in a good position to make some assumptions and extrapolate out a reasonable estimate. What percentage of the active young adults in your ward committed a sin like this over a four year period?

I got sent to "Standards" as a freshman because I wasn't wearing socks and I tried to cash a check in the Bookstore. The lady refused to cash my check because my dress wasn't in accordance with the honor code AND she sent my name upstairs for HC counseling. Of course, being an irresponsible freshman, the standards office thought it necessary to send a note home to mom and dad telling them I had been counseled. My dad called me up absolutely pissed, thinking that I was going to be excommunicated or something. Especially nice of them to send a note home to the parents of irresponsible freshmen and NOT tell them that it was for a meaningless offense...

As to the poll - I really should have clicked - "No" since I pretty much kept the spirit of the honor code, if not the absolute letter of it...

Actually - thinking about it, I guess I did some things that could've gotten me in huge trouble, perhaps kicked out of BYU. But they weren't 'moral' issues, they were 'pranks.' Today the same pranks could get one a felony charge - stupidly, but a felony charge nonetheless. When my roommate noticed a report about a Provo police investigation of our pranks in the PDH, we thought it best to cease the pranking activities...

The four years I generally have youth less than 25% get into much trouble, that doesn't' involve a computer. However the next 4 years which a singles ward bishop would deal with them, I know that percentage jumps exponentially.

Oops. I responded to the question on the poll rather than the question in the first post. Of course everybody (or nearly everybody) breaks the honor code. I did it on a weekly basis, if not daily. But never did anything that might have gotten me expelled. Or at least I haven't heard of people getting expelled for the sorts of code-breaking I was continually involved in.

Not sure if much has changed (I hope so) but I was suprised at the amount of inaction that was taken in response to cheating at BYU. Most of it involved the testing center where information was shared from someone who had taken the test with others who had not. In one instance, an entire test was smuggled out and being used as a "study guide" for others in the class who had yet to take it. Another instance was a student in a CS class who hired someone to do all his programming assignments for him.

The only time action was taken by the HCO for cheating was when a student in one of my classes was caught red handed with a copy of the test as he was ready to take the same test. But that's not what got him expelled. He broke into the testing center to steal his file before it could be reviewed and forwarded to the professor and was caught by university police for B&E.

Yeah. I confessed or was caught for all of my violations. Not all of them to the HCO (only one), but to my BYU bishops and was not expelled for any of them. The two bishops I worked things out with were both BYU employees.
