Just think of all of the cool things you could do without the overhead of the BSA. Camping, biking, sports, music, water skiing, surfing, snorkeling, fishing, canyoneering, rock-climbing, ATVs, shooting, .... Not to mention all kinds of community service projects.

Joining the Boy scouts is much more fun
than most anything that I have done
You can learn some skills
Climb some hills
Play some ball!
And that's not all
Hiking, biking, making friends
there just doesn't seem to be an end
to all the things that Boy Scouts do
So why don't YOU be a Boy Scout, too!

Life Scout. Me and a buddy hitchhiked on one of our ten mile hikes and after that I felt like it just wouldn't be right if I ever did get my Eagle so I dropped out. Both of my boys have theirs because of a mother that felt it was important.

That reminds me of a story. When I was in scouts we were on a campout that involved backpacking. The next morning we were hiking back to the cars and my buddy and I disagreed with the route selected by the scoutmaster. We knew a much more scenic route. He shrugged his shoulders and let us split up and go by ourselves. When we got down to the cars, they were gone. The main group got back before us and I guess he just didn't want to wait for us. We ended up hitch-hiking back home.

I look back now on that experience and just shake my head. What kind of scoutmasters lets some boys just take off on their own? And who leaves a bunch of kids in the mountains? If a leader did that with one of my kids, I would want to strangle him. I think he hated being scoutmaster and was just hoping to get released.

Troop 210, Eagle scout. I am not a fan of scouting, but I absolutely love it when they call up an Eagle's nest. I go up on the stand, sit in my comfortable seat, and shake my head and look with scorn at the males down below.

About my Eagle. I went in to get my project approved by the district. The guy liked it, but had a whole bunch of suggestions that he started writing all over the proposal. Until we had this interchange:

Council Guy: When do you turn 18?
Me: In 2 weeks.

He then started crossing out all of the notes he had made. To his credit, he helped me find a way to get it done. I have known Scouters who, at that point, would have decided I was unworthy to be an Eagle, and shut me down.

I just got released from my stint as a varsity scout coach / teacher's quorum advisor. During that time, we had an Eagle Court for 19 eagles. They had all the leaders stand for recognition ... which was lame because I'd been in the calling for all of a month or two. Anyway later on when they had the Eagle's Nest, I'm fairly certain I got several disapproving stares when I didn't stand / go up there / whatever they do.

Backing up for a second, can someone explain to an outsider how it's a benefit to go sit up in front of everyone where you have to kind-of behave instead of hanging with the ladies and the kids in the audience?

It's not sacrament meeting, you don't have to behave too much. At least I don't. Plus it's usually pretty short, at least in our ward. Plus you get to stare down your bishop who only made Star.

Men are creatures of habit. They have an alpha gene in them. Whenever an opportunity arises to receive praise/credit and distinguish themselves as being superior to the rest of the pack, they are genetically hardwired to do such, esp in the presence of ladies (potential mates). It is all very primal, actually.

I'm an outsider, too, but believe that's the whole point of it.

I've been to one court of honor now, so I guess I'm not that much of an outsider anymore.

Actually I got the t-shirt from Nurnberg. I went to high school there. They used to have Servicemens Conferences in Berctgarten for all the military members in Europe. My family skipped a Saturday afternoon session and hiked up there. From the Hotel it was about a 3 mile hike and climbed about 3000 feet.

For those that want the Church to ditch Scouts, there is hope on the horizon as long as he can stay alive.
